You can't really talk about Jeju without mentioning gogi guksu (pork noodle soup), right? At the famous spots you often either wait forever or end up underwhelmed, but Handam Guksu had it all — a clean, pleasant space and food that delivered too. If you're planning a trip around Aewol, definitely pay attention to this one!

Parking and the room at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch has its own parking space right out front, which made driving there really convenient. A lot of the Aewol area is a parking battle, so being able to just pull right in without worrying was a huge plus.

The first thing I felt walking in was, 'wow, this is clean!' The tables were spaced out comfortably, and the crisp Aewol scenery through the windows made even the wait for food feel nice. The owner and staff greeted us warmly too, so the visit started off on a good note.

The self-serve side dish bar and what we ordered
The side dishes were self-serve too, so we could scoop as much as we wanted without feeling self-conscious about it.

Rich bone-broth pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles, dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced pork).

All the side dishes were fresh and paired well with the noodles.

How are the rich bone-broth pork noodles?
First up was the signature dish, the rich bone-broth pork noodles. The moment the broth arrived, the milky color already looked special, and one spoonful in I let out an actual 'wow.'

You could really taste that it had been simmered for a long time — deep, savory bone-broth flavor. No gamey smell at all, and it was rich yet left a surprisingly clean finish in the mouth.

The noodles were cooked perfectly springy and soaked up the broth well, and the meat on top was thick yet so tender it basically melts in your mouth when wrapped with the noodles. Totally recommend this if you want something warm to soothe your stomach!

What do the dongchimi bibim noodles taste like?
The dongchimi bibim noodles (mixed noodles with radish water kimchi) was the perfect match to the savoriness of the pork noodles! The sauce wasn't overly sweet or sharp, and the refreshing, tangy umami of dongchimi was the real charm. One mix and a bite, and that crisp freshness washes right through your mouth — the kind of flavor that could bring back your appetite even on a listless summer day.

We also ordered the dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced pork) as a side since noodles alone felt like it wasn't quite enough — and we would've regretted skipping it.
Alternating bites — a spoonful of pork noodle broth, then a bite of bibim noodles — creates a 'warm and cool' harmony that rivals sweet-and-salty combos. If you like bibim noodles, this is a flavor that's hard not to love.

A full Jeju-style spread on the table — very much a local Aewol favorite.

Dombe naengsuyuk wrapped up with the bibim noodles
Cold sliced pork has a charm all its own compared to the warm version — the grain of the meat stays intact while the texture is still wonderfully chewy. All the fat is trimmed off so it's light, and the flavor gets more savory the more you chew.

It's delicious eaten with the sauce and side dishes it comes with, but the real winning combo is topping the dongchimi bibim noodles with a slice of cold pork and wrapping it up together! A premium side dish that makes you crave a drink to go with it.

If you want to try proper pork noodle soup and some standout specialty noodles in Aewol, Jeju, definitely visit Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, a true local favorite. Highly recommend it as a spot to duck into for a quick bowl after sea-gazing when you're feeling peckish 👍
