Hush cut for thick curly hair at Chamer, a Dongnae hair salon in Busan

After a long stretch of just getting trims, I finally went to Chamer, a hair salon in Dongnae, Busan, for a C-curl perm. In the end I got something totally different, and I'm honestly so happy with the result — here's the review 🤍

Getting off at the Dongnae Raemian Ipark bus stop, it was a 3-minute walk. Close to the subway and close to the bus — a very satisfying location if you're getting around on foot :) It's on the 2nd floor, right across from Seokjeong Galbi, a famous Dongnae galbi (grilled short rib) restaurant, so it's easy for anyone to find.

Going up to the 2nd floor, there's Chamer. Something about the name reminds me of La Mer cosmetics — is it just me? Haha.

A café-like salon interior

Walking into Chamer, the interior was the first thing that caught my eye. It's bright and modern, and the little objects placed around the space are so pretty I ended up just looking around while I waited.

I arrived a bit early for my appointment and waited in the waiting area. There were mint candies, so I grabbed one — yum. Even the candy jar was pretty.

Why the C-curl perm became a hush cut after the consultation

My original reason for visiting Chamer was a C-curl perm. I've had thick hair since I was young, so I always got styles that removed a lot of volume — from shaggy cuts to layered cuts, all the styles of those eras — otherwise I'd end up looking like Hagrid, ㅠ. My hair has thinned out a bit since then, but I still hear "you have so much hair" every time I go to a salon.

I've been sticking with a layered cut for 8 years now! I love the cut design, but since I never got a perm to go with it, I always had to blow-dry it myself. So this time I decided to finally get a C-curl perm, and headed to Chamer, a hair salon in Dongnae.

This was the state of my mid-length layered cut before the appointment. Thick hair, but dry and frizzy, so it drooped downward, and being curly made it look even messier.

My designer for the day was Siwoo, the head stylist. When I said I wanted a C-curl perm, she asked me very carefully about my usual clothing style, why I wanted this perm, and whether I usually blow-dry my hair properly. Since my hair is thick, limp, and curly, she said perming it in this state would make it even more frizzy, and recommended cutting it first instead.

The hush cut on thick, curly hair

This is how it looked after the hush cut. So much lighter! What I really wanted was a tidy, light look without frizz, and something easy to style — so to match that, she cut it very lightly with a hush cut and then recommended volume magic straightening to finish it neatly and make it easy to maintain.

I usually have a pretty fixed idea of what I want, but Siwoo gave such a thorough consultation that I somehow got pulled along with it — hush cut, done 😆 Now I was nervous-excited to see what the volume magic straightening would do.

How the volume magic straightening was done

Time for the volume magic. After the cut, she applied the volume magic solution and rolled the crown area with hair rollers to keep the volume up. A regular straightening perm just flattens everything, which makes the crown look sunken, but volume magic gives lift at the roots, so I waited hoping that part would hold up better.

There were various drinks to choose from while waiting, and I went with iced green tea — they even covered the cup for hygiene :)

While waiting, I noticed some personal color diagnosis materials nearby. Curious, I asked about them, and she said that if you get a dye job, they recommend colors matched to your personal color. So professional! I definitely want to come back to Chamer next time I want to dye my hair.

After the shampoo, it was time to straighten it all out. Since I have so much hair, it took a while — the two stylists really worked hard on this one.

My hair getting pulled straight, strand by strand. Watching Siwoo work, I noticed she left some lift at the roots and straightened from lower down.

Please, hair, don't be frizzy, don't stick flat, just be smooth and shiny.

Last shampoo of the day. Chamer uses the Ahyunchae shampoo line for the whole process — I'd used that line before and liked it, so this was another satisfying detail.

Finally, the finished look. This is the shortest my hair has ever been, and I was so happy with it. It was my first hush cut too, so I was half excited, half nervous going in — but it turned out to be a life-best hairstyle. It's just so light, and I love it!

The volume at the crown held up nicely, and everyone around me kept saying the style suited me so well, which made for an extra fun week. Thanks to Siwoo's great eye, I found a style that really fits me. Thank you so much 🤍
