Songni-dan-gil Korean pub with autumn gizzard shad sashimi: Daegang

In short

Daegang is a Korean pub serving aged sashimi on Songni-dan-gil in Songpa, Seoul. On a weekday evening the outdoor patio seats were already full, so dinner happened in Daegang's reclaimed-wood indoor room with gizzard shad sashimi (jeoneo-hoe) at 34,000 won, draft beer and soju. Between the nutty autumn sashimi and the 90s and 00s K-pop on the speakers, Daegang is an easy pick for a good-mood bar near Seokchon Lake.

Fall is the season to eat seasonal raw fish, isn't it 🍂 I went to Daegang, an aged-sashimi Korean bar in Songni-dan-gil, Jamsil! Daegang serves fresh flounder sashimi and assorted aged sashimi platters brought up from Gampo, plus all kinds of cozy Korean bar snacks. Apparently on days when the head chef personally wins the bid at auction, you can enjoy seasonal sashimi and seafood at crazy good prices. So exciting~ 😆 Let's go!

On the way to Daegang, an aged-sashimi Korean bar in Songni-dan-gil, Jamsil

Where is Daegang? Walkable from Seokchon, Jamsil and Songpanaru stations

Daegang, this Jamsil favorite for aged sashimi, is close to Seokchon Station, Jamsil Station, and Songpanaru Station all at once, and I took the bus over. Fall weather makes me happy, but it's short, so I gotta enjoy it fast! 😎

Daegang's patio is full even on weeknights, and closes at 10:30pm

Even though it was a weekday evening, Daegang's outdoor patio seats were already completely full, so I had to wait. The outdoor seating only runs until 10:30pm, so keep that in mind!

So many people even on a weekday lol. The patio is spread out nicely and there's nothing better than an outdoor bar in fall weather. Get there early to secure a patio spot!

I'll come back and try for a patio seat again next time~

Inside Daegang: reclaimed-wood interior and 90s-00s K-pop

Inside Daegang there's bar counter seating and table seating, all done up with reclaimed wood interiors, giving it that free-spirited Songni-dan-gil feel and a cozy vibe like an old family home 👏 And 90s–00s pop songs were playing, which made the mood perfect >< Exactly my generation's music lol. So fun~

There's a self-serve bar near the patio with ssamjang, soy sauce, spoons, chopsticks, seaweed, and more.

Here comes the fall seasonal sashimi that they say even a runaway daughter-in-law would come home for — gizzard shad sashimi!!^_^ The look of it alone is insane 🩷

A plate of fall seasonal gizzard shad sashimi at Daegang

It comes with a full lineup of sides — makjang (fermented soybean paste sauce), chogochujang (vinegared chili paste), garlic, chili, radish sprouts, wasabi, and even lemon~~

Makjang, chogochujang, garlic and other sides for the gizzard shad sashimi

My beloved gizzard shad sashimi. It seems like people are kind of split on it, but I honestly don't get why. The texture is different from other sashimi — chewy yet smooth going down — and it's so good! Anyone who doesn't understand this taste is missing out.

The more you eat gizzard shad sashimi, the more the savory umami builds up, and you can taste that slightly oily richness unique to the fish, but it's not greasy at all — it just tastes like a proper fall fish 👏

Gizzard shad sashimi with a glass of soju makes a perfect fall evening... aah~ this is the life

Dipped in makjang it's salty and rich, dipped in chogochujang it's sweet and tangy, so it's fun to alternate between the two.

A strawberry cream flavored Chupa Chups given on the way out

Right when we were leaving, they gave us a Chupa Chups lollipop, and it was the strawberry cream flavor — my favorite 🍭 Daegang, this sashimi bar on Songni-dan-gil, is a thoughtful spot that even prepares sweet candy for the way out.

Is Daegang worth a visit? Final verdict

I soaked up the atmosphere at Daegang, this Songni-dan-gil bar, with fresh sashimi and a glass of soju. If you're near Jamsil's Songni-dan-gil or Seokchon Lake looking for a bar with great food and great vibes, 'Daegang' is the answer!! 🫶🏻
