Korean BBQ dinner for two under ₩50,000 in Mapo: Mapo Gui Madang

In short

Mapo Gui Madang Yonggang Direct Branch is a frozen pork belly BBQ restaurant on the Macho food street in Yonggang-dong, Mapo, Seoul. Two people ordered 4 servings of frozen pork belly, 1 serving of makchang (grilled beef intestines) and bibim-myeon (spicy cold noodles) to finish, for about ₩40,000-50,000 without alcohol, and the three kimchis — green onion, napa cabbage and washed kimchi — were as memorable as the meat. Don't stop at the pork belly at Mapo Gui Madang: one serving of makchang is worth adding.

First photo upon arriving at Mapo Gui Madang Yonggang Direct Branch

This is a review of Mapo Gui Madang Yonggang Direct Branch, a spot known for being delicious on the Macho food culture street in Yonggang-dong. I went with one other person this time and we ate 4 servings of frozen pork belly + 1 serving of beef intestines + bibim-myeon (spicy cold noodles)!

It was quite a lot for two people, but it was so tasty we just kept eating haha. We walked out stuffed to the brim.

How much does dinner for two cost at Mapo Gui Madang?

We didn't drink any alcohol this time and the total came to about ₩40,000-50,000. Considering how much we ate, I thought the price was pretty reasonable.

Frozen pork belly at Mapo Gui Madang: go heavy on the pepper

You have to try the frozen pork belly 🥓 Grill the thin slices until golden brown on the pan and sprinkle on plenty of black pepper — it's genuinely delicious. The savory flavor unique to frozen pork belly combined with the pepper aroma kept my chopsticks going back for more.

Three kimchis as good as the meat

What I liked as much as the meat at Mapo Gui Madang was the kimchi! They serve green onion kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, and washed kimchi, and every single one was delicious. The green onion kimchi in particular paired so well with the pork belly — putting it on top of a piece of meat was fantastic.

Three kimchi side dishes: green onion, napa cabbage, and washed kimchi

The kimchi was as delicious as the meat 🥬 There were three kinds — green onion kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, and washed kimchi — and all three were tasty. The green onion kimchi especially was a real standout! The pungent kick of the green onion paired with a tangy, savory seasoning made it delicious even on its own, but eating it alongside the fatty pork belly was an especially great combination.

Lightly grilling the green onion kimchi in the pork belly fat wilts the green onion, bringing out more sweetness and savoriness while cutting through the richness of the meat, so I kept reaching for more. Definitely try the combo of a piece of pork belly plus grilled green onion kimchi.

Napa cabbage kimchi

The napa cabbage kimchi's seasoning wasn't too strong or overpowering either — it was well-fermented, tangy, and refreshing. Grilled on the pan in the meat's fat, the edges get slightly crispy and the savory flavor really comes alive.

Washed kimchi

With the seasoning rinsed off, it's clean and mild, but it still keeps the tangy flavor unique to aged kimchi, making it great to pair between bites of fatty meat like pork belly or beef intestines. It doesn't overpower the flavor of the meat and instead cleanses your palate! The green onion kimchi was savory, the napa cabbage kimchi was tangy and refreshing, and the washed kimchi was clean — each had its own charm, so it was fun switching between them. Amazing hand at cooking, chef 👍

Why you should add one serving of makchang

Before visiting, I searched Naver for reviews and noticed a lot of people saying the beef intestines were especially delicious.

An extra order of beef intestines

Trying it, there was almost no gamey smell, and it was chewy and savory — a great extra order while eating pork belly. It had a different charm from the pork belly, so even though I was already pretty full, my chopsticks kept going back. It seemed like it would pair so well with soju that I was almost sad we couldn't drink that day! If you're visiting for the first time, I'd personally recommend not stopping at just the pork belly — definitely add a serving of beef intestines. Next time I revisit, I'll definitely order the pork belly + beef intestines combo again.

Finishing with bibim-myeon 🍜

Bibim-myeon ordered to finish the meal

After eating our fill of meat, it felt like a waste to just stop there, so we ordered bibim-myeon (spicy cold mixed noodles). The noodles come tossed in a sweet, tangy, slightly spicy sauce, topped with cucumber and boiled egg — the perfect way to reset your palate after all that meat!

It's delicious on its own, but it's even better with a big piece of pork belly on top. 🤤 Try rolling the noodles around a piece of pork belly grilled until the edges get slightly crispy 🐷

Why Mapo Gui Madang works for a group dinner near Mapo or Gongdeok

We ate our fill without alcohol — 4 servings of pork belly, 1 serving of beef intestines, and bibim-myeon for two — and it still only came to about ₩40,000-50,000, which felt satisfying. Most of all, it wasn't just the meat that was good — the green onion kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, and washed kimchi were all delicious too, and that's what stuck with me.

  • ✔️ Go heavy on the pepper with the pork belly
  • ✔️ Eat the green onion kimchi together with the pork belly
  • ✔️ Make sure to add the beef intestines too
  • ✔️ Finish it off with bibim-myeon
