Bupyeong monkfish and octopus braise for three: Donghae Haemultang

Hello ◖| ˶˘꒳˘˶ |◗♪•*¨*•.¸¸♬︎ It's the weekend, what's everyone up to? I'm heading out to get my hair done today!! Chuseok is coming up so I want to look pretty before then haha. Today I'm introducing a monkfish braise spot in Bupyeong, Haemulmyeongga Donghae Haemultang! I went with my mother-in-law and husband, the three of us. It was delicious, let's get into the honest review!
What is Bupyeong's seafood stew street like now?
Haemulmyeongga Donghae Haemultang is a seafood stew and braise restaurant on Bupyeong's seafood stew street. The street itself has really changed!! There used to be way more seafood stew places, but they've clearly declined while lamb skewer shops have shot up. Probably because a lot of people from other countries come to eat there haha.

Parking at Donghae Haemultang: the owner parks for you
For parking, the owner does valet right beside the shop!! It's super convenient. You just pull up, leave your key inside, hop out, and walk right in.
A weekday evening inside Donghae Haemultang
We went a little later on a weekday evening and there were a lot of customers, most of them having a drink! Maybe that's why the inside felt pretty lively and noisy! So our voices got louder too haha. It made me think I should have a drink here too... next time, seafood stew with soju? That kind of thought haha.
We were debating between seafood stew and seafood braise, and ended up ordering the monkfish and octopus braise, medium (3 servings)! But since this place is known as a seafood stew specialist for its rich broth made with fresh seafood and deep stock, I was curious about the stew too...
We wore white that day so we grabbed aprons haha. The inside is spacious, right?! Seems great for group dinners.
Banchan and the mussel soup that starts the meal
The basic side dishes! First up was mussel soup, spicy and clean-tasting, great for anyone having a drink, and the rest of the banchan had plenty of variety and tasted great too! The pancake in particular was savory and light, so good. I asked for a refill halfway through and they gave me one!! ପ(⑅❛ᵒ❛⑅)ଓ
How was the medium monkfish and octopus braise for three?
The monkfish and octopus braise arrived topped with big chunks of octopus! There isn't really a good hero shot, why is that... usually they'll wait a bit if you want to take a photo, but as soon as the bowl was set down they grabbed the octopus and started cutting it up ㅠㅠ, so the photos came out a little blurry, please bear with me.
The octopus is really chunky, right? It leaned more chewy than tender, and I liked that it was so big ʚ( ｡•᎑•｡)ɞ
When I tried to take a photo holding the octopus, my mother-in-law wanted to join in, so the three of us took a photo holding octopus together hahaha. The sauce was just spicy enough, not too much and not too little, really delicious! I kept eating because it was mildly spicy, but I guess it was a bit much for me. The next day was a little rough, hehe.
Ask and they bring chojang (vinegar chili sauce)
I'm a vinegar-chili sauce person, so I asked and they gave it to me “ପ(„ơ ᴗ ơ„)ଓ”🤍 When I asked, they brought enough for all three of us haha. (If you're going to do that, maybe be a little gentler about it... they kept dropping the dishes down pretty hard, the whole time.)
The monkfish was tender and springy-chewy, so good as always!
Finish with fried rice — order plenty
I didn't want to lose the flow mid-meal, so I ordered one fried rice, and they fried it right beside our table! At first the portion looked generous, I was like wow~, but they'd just spread out one portion really well to look bigger. It was so good I regretted not ordering two ㅠ. If you're reading this, order plenty of fried rice. Maybe it's the sauce, but it's genuinely delicious. You know putting the leftover bean sprouts on top of the fried rice is amazing, right!!!
There's dental floss and toothpicks at the counter where you pay, so use them if you need them~ Bupyeong seafood braise spot Haemulmyeongga Donghae Haemultang is delicious! Haha.
