Yongdam, Jeju fish restaurant: cheonggukjang set at 2pm with a baby

When traveling in Jeju you end up eating a lot of black pork and seafood, but sometimes you just want a meal of rice with grilled fish. This place had an assorted grilled fish set where you could try several kinds of fish at once, and it made for a decent family meal!

This should be especially useful for people traveling in Jeju with a baby like us, or anyone wanting a filling Korean meal right after landing at Jeju Airport or right before heading back.

How far is Naneun Jigeum from Jeju Airport, and where do you park?

Naneun Jigeum Saengseoni Meokgo Sipda Yongdam Airport Branch is in Yongdam-dong, not far from Jeju Airport and the Jeju passenger ferry terminal. At 168 Yongmun-ro, 1st floor, Jeju-si, it's easy to fit into your route right after arrival or right before departure.

For parking, there's a nearby free temporary lot or street parking. I found a spot right next to the restaurant, but there's also a free temporary public parking lot in front of Top Mart, 3 Yonghan-ro.

Inside Naneun Jigeum: what the room is like with a baby

We arrived past two on a weekday and got in without waiting, though there were quite a few other diners. Naneun Jigeum Saengseoni Meokgo Sipda Yongdam Airport Branch is on the cleaner, tidier side compared to a typical grilled fish restaurant, so it's a good fit for a family meal.

The window-side seats let in sunlight and a view outside, which cuts down on that closed-in feeling. We went with our baby too, and since grilled fish isn't a spicy or heavy dish, it's an easy choice for a family meal out.

It gets grilled right when you order, so it's crisp outside, tender inside!

There's also a self-serve corner that's kept clean!

The menu is built around grilled fish with several set options. The Big Son's Set comes with assorted grilled fish plus a stew, the Mom's Set pairs grilled fish with stir-fried pork, and the Small Son's Set is centered on braised cutlassfish.

The assorted grilled fish usually comes with mackerel, cutlassfish, flounder, and croaker. For the stew, you can choose between cheonggukjang, soft tofu stew, or kimchi jjigae.

The grilled fish came out so generously portioned I had to photograph it right away.

Nicely browned on the outside, and the flesh inside was plentiful, moist, and tender.

Grilled fish can easily end up too dry or too salty if it's mishandled, but overall this was just the right level to eat with rice.

After eating a lot of heavy food, having warm rice with clean-tasting grilled fish felt easy on the stomach — a proper meal!

Cheonggukjang, the stew that paired best with the grilled fish

The cheonggukjang paired really well with the grilled fish! Its color wasn't too red or intense — a savory cheonggukjang that goes well with grilled fish.

A spoonful of rice topped with fish flesh, then a spoonful of cheonggukjang in between — it felt exactly like home cooking! We wanted to try a little of several kinds of fish rather than just one, so going with the assorted set was much more satisfying.

You get to try several kinds of fish at once and it comes with a stew too, so it works well with parents who like Korean food, and it also suited us as a family looking for a meal in Jeju with a baby.

Being close to Jeju Airport, it also seems like a good fit for eating right after landing on your first day, or for a filling meal before heading to the airport on your last day.
