Location, parking, waiting and seating

Being right at the entrance to Simhaksan makes it easy to find, and it's a great spot to eat after a hike on the mountain. It's also very close to Lotte Premium Outlets Paju, so it works well for a meal before or after shopping — buy your parents some clothes and treat them to lunch here, and you've got a nice little course. :) Parking is easy right around the restaurant, which is even more pleasant on a nice autumn day.

There's a table-management app if you need to wait, but I went on a weekday and didn't have to wait at all. ^^

There's a separate room for group use that can fit around 20 people. Booking ahead is definitely the safer, smarter move. ^^ The regular seating is mostly 4-person tables, good for groups of 2 to 4.

Menu and prices — the Deul Set and the Kkot Set

True to the restaurant's name, the menu is a mini hanjeongsik style. Deul Set is ₩20,000 per person, Kkot Set is ₩26,000 per person. You can also add extras like grilled mackerel, more pork, more squid, stone-pot rice, or plain rice. The menu itself is simple — just Deul Set and Kkot Set. The Kkot Set differs in that it adds either imyeonsu (a type of local fish) or mackerel. :) I ordered two Deul Sets.

Trying the Deul Set

First up: the neat brass-bowl spread

Overall, seven banchan (side dishes) came out along with pumpkin porridge to start. A bubbling traditional doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and a fresh vegetable salad were also included.

You can freely grab ssam (wrap) leaves as you like, and if any banchan runs low, there's a self-serve corner where you can help yourself.

I started with the pumpkin porridge — soft, sweet, and warm, it settled my stomach nicely. :) Every banchan was neat and fresh, exactly what you'd expect from a proper hanjeongsik place.

The doenjang is actually cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste), and the ssamjang (dipping sauce) is a special house recipe that's no joke — healthy and an amazing match for hanjeongsik-style ssambap.

Second: the pairing of nutty stone-pot rice and pork bulgogi

Of course, a good hanjeongsik restaurant needs good rice — if the rice isn't tasty, the ssambap falls flat. The freshly made stone-pot rice here was excellent, and paired perfectly with the smoky pork and squid for wrapping.

Personally, I preferred the pork ssambap. The squid portion felt a bit skimpy. The seasoning on the pork was just right, and it made a wonderful combo wrapped up in a leaf. It was great with plain rice too, or as ssambap.

A bite of the nutty nurungji (scorched rice) at the end rounded out a very satisfying meal! It's a gentle, satisfying Korean meal you could comfortably bring your parents to.

Near the checkout, there's also an area for ice cream and coffee, which could be handy for a quick finish.

I was headed to a nearby large café afterward, so I didn't end up trying it myself. ^^

A 3-minute drive after lunch: Paju's large café course

After a satisfying hanjeongsik meal, it's just a 3-minute drive to a tour of Paju's atmospheric large cafés. Mountfulle has an impressive open rooftop view and is a hot large café — a healing kind of space that ups the mood for a weekend date.

Burnt Umber feels quiet and artsy, like a hideaway full of artwork — a hip spot to enjoy a good Americano.
