Solo dining sushi omakase 15p at Hwangje Sushi, Ilsan near Jeongbalsan
In short
Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch is a sushi and kaisendon restaurant in Goyang, Gyeonggi, near Western Dome between Jeongbalsan and Madu stations. Dining solo at a single-seat table, the writer ordered the signature omakase sushi 15 pieces and finished everything from abalone porridge, grilled salmon, and cucumber seaweed salad to soy sauce shrimp, aged kimchi flounder, and engawa. A great spot for a proper, aged-fish sushi meal even when eating alone.

Today I'm sharing a review of a great spot for solo dining near Ilsan Lake Park! I was around the Western Dome area in Ilsan and heard there was a good sushi place nearby, so I went right away!

I'd heard for a while that this was a famous spot near Ilsan Lake Park, so I went in with high expectations haha
Today's spot is Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch (황제초밥 일산본점), famous as a sushi restaurant in Ilsan!
Exterior and location of Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch

Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch sits between Jeongbalsan Station and Madu Station, so the location is great if you're out at Western Dome or looking for a good spot near Ilsan Lake Park!
Single seating for solo dining, and the interior vibe

My first impression walking into Hwangje Sushi was how clean it was. The interior isn't huge, but there's a good mix of seating — 4-person, 2-person, and single-seat tables! Since I came alone, I sat comfortably at a single seat haha.
I got there right after break time ended! At first there was no one around, so I got a relaxed spot, but within a few minutes the place filled right up. I guess there's a reason it's famous as a top Ilsan restaurant.
Self-service bar setup

The self-service bar even has kids' tableware, plates, soup broth, and scissors ready to go — this place seems great for visiting with children too!
Menu and prices

Once you sit down, you order through a tablet system, and there were so many menu options I really had trouble deciding haha

After much deliberation, order complete haha

As soon as I ordered, they set out rakkyo (pickled shallots) and ginger. I love rakkyo so much that I kept refilling it, and having it right at my seat was so convenient.
Solo dining review: signature omakase sushi 15p
This is what I ordered! Signature Omakase Sushi 15 pieces (includes mini udon noodles).
It felt like a bit much for solo dining, but since I'd made the trip, I wanted to eat properly, so that's what I picked. Honestly, even while ordering I worried it might be too much food haha
But today I really wanted to eat something good, so after some deliberation I ordered it — and I think it was a great decision.
I'll say it upfront: I finished it all. I usually eat pretty small portions, but it was so good I ended up eating everything!!

Starters — abalone porridge, grilled salmon, cucumber seaweed salad
The starters were abalone porridge, grilled salmon, and cucumber seaweed salad — good dishes to ease into before the meal haha. Each one tasted great! I didn't expect much from the cucumber seaweed salad, but it was tangy and really woke up my appetite haha. My anticipation was already building before I even got to the sushi.

The sushi 15p spread

Finally the sushi arrived! It looked so generous just visually.

On top were squid, sweet shrimp, soy sauce shrimp, eel, and grilled shrimp lined up neatly, and of all of them, the soy sauce shrimp was so plump and chewy — my favorite piece!
Usually this kind of assortment at sushi places is the budget option, often just okay. But here every single piece was so upscale that I felt a little sad watching each bite disappear.

Below that were seasonal aged kimchi, sea bream, flounder, engawa, salmon belly, blue-back fish, toro, medium-fatty tuna, and akami. Just looking at it, I could see the shine and glossiness on every piece.
Among all of them, the flounder topped with aged kimchi, the blue-back fish, and the engawa were the best!! Engawa is the fin muscle of the flounder, and I was genuinely shocked to find this quality of engawa at a sushi restaurant!
The mini udon that came alongside paired perfectly with the sushi when I took sips of the broth in between bites, and the sweet potato tempura was the perfect sweet finish after finishing all the sushi. I enjoyed it so much I definitely want to come back next time I'm at Western Dome or Ilsan Lake Park!!
This time I came solo, but next time I want to bring my family haha.
