A dessert café I go to often in Gangnam

When I'm trying to decide where to go for coffee in Gangnam, Something About Coffee is genuinely one of the places I go to most often. This isn't my first visit here — I'm actually a real regular who's been coming for a while.

I almost always get cake when I come here, and my favorite is the yellow cheese cake.

The cakes at Something About Coffee are dense and rich overall, so this is the place I think of when I really want to eat a proper dessert.

I heard they had new autumn menu items

This time I heard they'd released new autumn items — fig black sesame cake, Mont Blanc cake, and a new type of fruit sable — so I made another trip after a while :)

What I had: black sesame cream latte, iced americano, fig black sesame cake, and Earl Grey pound cake — four things total! I went just curious about the new menu but ended up thoroughly enjoying two desserts 🤍 Let me show you my honest review of each one!

The walk from Sinnonhyeon Station and the building

It's an easy walk from Sinnonhyeon Station, and it's also quickly visible from the alley behind Gangnam Station CGV. Since the café takes up an entire three-story building, the space feels pretty large even though it's right in the middle of Gangnam.

I first found this place while looking for a café with plenty of seating for a meetup in Gangnam, and now it's become somewhere I come to on purpose just for the desserts.

1st floor | A slightly cozier atmosphere

The first floor, which you see right as you walk in, feels a bit cozier than the floors above. Since the space is divided by floor overall, even though it's a busy Gangnam Station café, it didn't feel as crowded into one single space.

2nd floor | Ordering counter + dessert showcase

The 2nd floor is where you order and where the dessert showcase is — as soon as you go up, cakes and baked goods are spread out in a really wide variety.

From scones, madeleines, financiers, and pound cakes that are good for grabbing lightly, to slice cakes, there's quite a variety, and the fact that the cake lineup changes each season is one reason I keep coming back.

This time, the fig desserts really stood out with that proper autumn feel.

Besides the fig black sesame cake I was curious about, I also spotted Mont Blanc cake and fruit sable, so I really stood there deliberating for a while. Also, popular cakes sometimes sell out if you go late, so if you have your heart set on a specific menu item, it's best to visit not too late.

3rd floor | Spacious seats with great sunlight

Order first, then go up one more floor to the 3rd floor. Something About Coffee has a slightly different seating atmosphere from the 1st to the 3rd floor, so there's a bit of fun in picking a different spot each time you come.

The 3rd floor has seating split into several different types, and there's also a space that connects to a terrace, so on nice-weather days a lot of people head upstairs.

This place gets busy during popular hours too, but since it's not a single-floor café and is instead spread across 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors, you can look for seats up or down — that's an advantage. It's nice to come chat with a friend, and the space itself is pretty enough for a dessert stop on a date, so I find myself coming here often.

I started with the fig black sesame cake, which was the whole reason for this visit 😋 A large piece of fresh fig sits on top, and on the side you can see a deep black-sesame-colored layer — the look alone screams new autumn menu.

True to Something About Coffee's cake style, I could feel a much denser, richer texture from the moment my fork went in.

The nutty flavor of black sesame comes through strongly first, and the fig comes in moist and refreshing here and there — the combination worked better than I expected ❤️

Rather than being salty and rich like the yellow cheese cake, this one felt more seasonal, with the nuttiness of black sesame lifted by the fig. If you like figs and also enjoy nutty black sesame desserts, this is a menu item worth trying once this autumn.

Earl Grey pound cake ₩6,800

The Earl Grey pound cake I picked alongside it had a different kind of richness from the cake. It had that dense, characteristic pound cake crumb, with the Earl Grey aroma rising subtly in the mouth — it went well with the americano.

I don't usually eat desserts that are too dry, but this one felt more packed inside than it looked, and cutting it into small pieces to eat with coffee worked really well.

Even from the photo, you can see the black sesame cream piled generously on top of the black sesame cream latte.

At first I tasted the cream on top by itself, then drank it together with the coffee below — the nuttiness of black sesame is pretty distinct. I worried that pairing it with the fig black sesame cake would make it a black sesame + black sesame combo that was too heavy, but since I also had the iced americano to alternate with, it ended up being just right.

If you're looking for a Gangnam Station café or Sinnonhyeon Station café with lots of dessert variety and spacious seating, I highly recommend Something About Coffee! I'm already a repeat regular here, so I check in every time a new menu comes out, and this autumn's new fig black sesame cake carried Something About Coffee's signature dense cake style really well — I enjoyed it a lot.
