Gangdong takeout chicken for two: Gimssi Chicken
In short
Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch is a takeout chicken shop in Amsa Market, Gangdong, Seoul. We packed up old-school fried chicken and medium-spicy dakgangjeong for a couple’s meal, and loved both the just-fried crunch and the chicken’s moist texture even when cold. Verdict: A great-value stop when you want fried chicken and dakgangjeong together.

I use Amsa Market near my home all the time. There are lots of great places to eat, and above all, such a wide variety of things to buy, so I come here often for groceries!!!

Among them, dakgangjeong (sweet-spicy glazed fried chicken bites) and fried chicken are two things my husband and I crave regularly.

Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch (김씨치킨 암사시장점) opened in Amsa Market not long ago. There was always a long wait whenever I passed by, so I was curious—and finally packed some up to try!! There is such a varied menu, so if you are looking for good dakgangjeong at Amsa Market, I really hope you will give it a try.
I especially recommend ordering the freshly fried chicken and spicy dakgangjeong together so you can enjoy two flavors at once!! Haha
Where Gimssi Chicken is in Amsa Market and takeout details

Gimssi Chicken is about a 230 m walk from Exit 1 of Amsa Station and is located inside Amsa Market. It is near the entrance around the middle of the market, so even first-time visitors should find it easily. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day! It operates as a takeout-only shop.
If you are visiting by car, they say parking vouchers are also provided if you use the market road public parking lot!!!
What are Gimssi Chicken’s menu and prices?

Looking at the signature items, bone-in fried chicken is ₩9,900 and seasoned chicken is ₩11,900. Their half-and-half chicken is also ₩11,900, which seemed like a good choice if you cannot decide between fried and seasoned chicken.

For dakgangjeong, you can choose mild, medium-spicy, or spicy, and order by size. Considering chicken prices these days, the prices overall felt reasonable, making it easy to grab some without feeling burdened. I also liked being able to choose the spice level to suit your taste.
Another nice thing was that they have more than fried chicken and dakgangjeong: there are cuts-by-part items, too. You can order only drumsticks, or wings and wingettes separately, which should be great for anyone with a favorite cut.

There are lots of sauces to pair with your food as well, so the menu selection is quite broad.
Packing up old-school fried chicken and medium-spicy dakgangjeong

We ordered old-school fried chicken and medium-spicy dakgangjeong together! (It would have been such a shame to choose only one, haha.) As expected, quite a few people were waiting when we visited, but the staff were kind. They kept frying chicken quickly, and after getting our waiting number and waiting a little, our order came out fast.

Freshly fried whole chicken that was good even after it cooled
First, the freshly fried old-school whole chicken! When we tried it right away while it was warm, the skin was wonderfully crisp and the meat was chewy yet tender.

It was not overly seasoned or salty—just right—so I kept reaching for it. My husband and I do not really discriminate between chicken parts and like them all, so we happily split it half and half. Haha. Since we were also eating the dakgangjeong, we had a little whole chicken left and put it in the refrigerator. Later, we took it out and ate it cold straight from the fridge, and it was so much better than expected.

There was no unpleasant chicken smell at all, and the meat was not dry even when cold, so we enjoyed it to the very end. Of course it was delicious warm, but if it is good cold too, that says it all!! Haha

Medium-spicy dakgangjeong with Shin Ramyun-level heat
We ordered the dakgangjeong medium-spicy, and I think you can think of it as about as hot as Shin Ramyun. I am not very good with spicy food, but it had a pleasantly spicy kick that kept me reaching for more. The sauce was not too heavy, overly sweet, or sticky, so it was not the kind of flavor you get tired of while eating.

We tried it with rice, and it went nicely as a side dish, so it worked well for a full meal too. For reference, they say the mild version is at a heat level that anyone who can eat kimchi can handle, so if you are not great with spicy food, starting with mild might be a good idea.
Packing up chicken and dakgangjeong together at Amsa Market

I had always been curious about Gimssi Chicken because it was crowded every time I went to Amsa Market. After trying it myself, it was delicious enough to make me want to try every other menu item too.

The old-school whole chicken was delicious without any off smell both fresh from the fryer and after cooling, and the dakgangjeong sauce was not overdone. I also liked that you can buy just the cuts you prefer, such as drumsticks or wings and wingettes, and that the prices are quite kind. Above all, we were happy that a place known as one of Seoul’s top three dakgangjeong spots had opened at Amsa Market so close to home. Haha
We plan to come back on days when we want to pack up chicken and dakgangjeong together. It is a great Amsa Market dakgangjeong spot for affordable takeout whenever you are craving dakgangjeong!!
