Gangdong chicken restaurant for juicy drumsticks: Gimssi Chicken

In short

Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch is a chicken restaurant at Amsa Market in Gangdong, Seoul. We ordered medium-spicy medium dakgangjeong for 9,000 won and eight drumsticks for 12,000 won, enjoying the firmer coating after the dakgangjeong cooled and the juicy meat inside the drumsticks. Verdict: a warmly welcoming market stop I want to revisit.

Amsa Market is famous for having so many great food spots. Haune visits often too, so I thought I had eaten pretty much everything—but there was one place I had missed?! Just as I was wondering about this place that supposedly does fried chicken, one of my favorite things, properly!!

Thanks to such a wonderful opportunity, I got to visit a chicken spot in Amsa-dong that showed the textbook meaning of crispy outside, juicy inside. The place we visited was Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch, located in Amsa Market!

Ordering medium-spicy dakgangjeong and drumsticks

There were choices for different sizes, spice levels, and favorite cuts. With a little help(?) from people around us who looked like regulars, here is what we ordered.

  • Medium-size, medium-spicy dakgangjeong (crispy sweet-and-spicy fried chicken): ₩9,000
  • 8 chicken drumsticks: ₩12,000

There were so many menu items that we were really agonizing over what to order, when an older customer at the register told us the drumsticks were very good. Decision made right away~ As soon as the order went in...

Chicken drumsticks being prepared after ordering

The drumsticks were fried once more until extra crackly and crisp. Meanwhile, the dakgangjeong was stir-fried in sauce on a griddle. The appetizing color had my mouth watering.

They even gave us a skewer of dakgangjeong as a service extra—such a fun touch! They were genuinely kind. This is exactly what market generosity is~ After trying it, I could not wait to dig in.

Medium-spicy dakgangjeong that was even better cooled

It was hard to believe this was only a medium size, and it was generously filled with tteok (chewy rice cakes), too.

The heat was a little spicier than Shin Ramyun. It was sweet yet spicy, so it did not become cloying. They told us it would taste even better if we bought it and let it cool a little, so that is what we did.

As the sauce gradually cooled from its piping-hot state, the coating looked glossy and developed a slightly firm texture—showing exactly what dakgangjeong is all about. Paired with the moist meat inside, it was impossible to stop reaching for more!

Dakgangjeong with tteok-kkochi-style sauce flavor

It tasted similar to the sauce on tteok-kkochi (rice-cake skewers), but with such lovely savory depth that it was familiar and new at once! It was the kind of flavor that made me pull out the beer I had been saving in the fridge.

Juicy drumsticks with a thin, crisp coating

Eight crisp chicken drumsticks

Can you see how satisfyingly substantial these drumsticks are? It was hard to believe they worked out to just over ₩1,000 each. You might think, “How special can a chicken drumstick taste?” But these were different.

Substantially sized chicken drumsticks

They had a gently salty, tender brine, with subtle notes of curry and pepper. The drumstick meat was juicy, while the thin batter had both a light crackle and a full crispness.

It is a familiar flavor, but somehow not a familiar flavor. It is a flavor you know is delicious, yet when the crisp texture meets that juiciness, there is no way it would not be good! We reheated the remaining drumsticks later in the air fryer, and they delivered the same texture and flavor as the first time.

Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch is a delightful food stop where you can experience all the warmth and generosity of the market. This Amsa Market dakgangjeong spot guarantees top-quality food plus kindness. And it is no secret that the drumsticks and fried chicken are delicious, too! I am absolutely planning to return—yes, I am~
