Mapo Station restaurant for a couple's gyukatsu set for two: Gyudo

In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese-style beef cutlet) restaurant on the first basement level of the Obelisk shopping arcade, connected directly to exits 1 and 2 of Mapo Station in Mapo, Seoul. On a return visit, the writer and her husband ordered the gyukatsu set for two and added curry, grilling each piece to their own liking on a personal tabletop brazier and alternating between salt, wasabi and the house sauce. Clean salt-and-wasabi bites followed by curry made one set feel like two dishes, so Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok is an easy pick for a couple's dinner or a date in Gongdeok.

I'm still very serious about gyukatsu 🙋🏻‍♀️ hahaha. After my last visit to Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch, a gyukatsu spot near Mapo Station, I kept thinking I should come back with my husband next time! Well, I finally did 🤍

This time the two of us took our time and ordered the gyukatsu set properly, adding curry on top to really enjoy it 🥩🍛 Gyukatsu should be crispy outside and soft, juicy inside, right? From the pink gyukatsu visuals to the fun of grilling it yourself on a personal brazier, plus the variety of sauces and pot rice, the whole setup was satisfying enough that my husband said it was delicious too 😆

Where is Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok, and how do you get there from Mapo Station?

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is at B1 138, Obelisk APT Sangga, 33 Mapo-daero, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea, directly connected to exits 1 and 2 of Mapo Station. Parking is available, and with solo-friendly counter seats and a calm atmosphere good for dates, it's also worth recommending for lunch or dinner for office workers in Gongdeok.

Being directly connected to the shopping complex from Mapo Station is a big plus, since you can visit comfortably even on cold or rainy days. Among restaurants near Mapo Station, the accessibility is great, which made it easy to meet my husband after work 👍🏻

Inside Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok: tables for four and counter seats for solo diners

The interior of Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch has an overall tidy wood-tone atmosphere. Along with 4-person tables, there are also counter seats that are comfortable for eating alone, so it works whether you come as a couple or solo.

It doesn't feel like a noisy meat restaurant — it's a place where two people can sit and talk while eating slowly, which made it fit well as a Gongdeok date spot 🤍

Table space good for two people to sit and eat

Besides the 4-person tables, there are also counter seats that are comfortable for eating solo, so it looked like a good place to visit even if you just want to eat gyukatsu by yourself.

The spacing between tables wasn't cramped either, and everything was kept clean overall, so my husband and I could eat comfortably :)

What comes with the gyukatsu set for two plus curry

This time we ordered the gyukatsu for two plus an added curry. Gyudo's gyukatsu doesn't come as just the meat alone — it's a full set with rice, miso soup, salad, and various side dishes, so it was hearty enough for a full meal.

With the food laid out on the table all at once, the visual was really filling! And of course I couldn't skip the gyukatsu-curry combo, so I added curry separately too 🍛 Adding the curry was such a good call haha. Being able to eat gyukatsu in so many different ways meant we didn't get tired of it even by the end, and enjoyed every bite 💛

The pink cross-section of the gyukatsu

As soon as the gyukatsu arrived, my husband and I both gasped at the visuals at the same time haha.

Inside the crispy fried exterior, the pink cross-section of meat looked moist and alive — can't you feel the tenderness just from the photo? 🥹 The breading wasn't thick or greasy but thin and crispy, so it didn't mask the flavor of the meat. Crispy outside, moist inside — proper gyukatsu! The meat was also cut thick, so even one piece felt satisfying, and the more you chewed, the more the savory meaty aroma and juices came through.

Grilling the gyukatsu to your own doneness on a personal brazier

Gyudo's gyukatsu is meant to be grilled piece by piece on the personal brazier set up at the table.

You can keep the pink center by cooking it lightly, or grill it a bit more for a golden, crispy finish — everyone can enjoy it at their own preferred doneness.

I liked lightly searing just the outside and keeping the inside moist, while my husband preferred leaving it on the brazier a bit longer to get it nice and golden haha.

Comparing gyukatsu grilled to different doneness levels

Even ordering the same gyukatsu, we could each adjust the doneness to our taste, which made eating together more fun 😆 Rather than piling a lot on at once, grilling just one or two pieces at a time meant we could keep enjoying it warm and crispy until the very end!

Salt, wasabi or house sauce: which pairing works best?

For the first piece, I tried it plain with nothing added to taste the gyukatsu itself. After that, I dabbed on a little salt, then alternated between wasabi and sauce. The salt brought out the savory flavor of the meat, the wasabi kept it clean without heaviness, and the house sauce added umami — each had its own distinct charm.

My favorite combo was, of course, gyukatsu + salt + wasabi 🤍 The salty salt made the juices feel richer, and the wasabi cleaned up the finish so I never got tired of it even eating piece after piece.

Why the curry is worth adding to the set

The hidden star of this meal was the curry we ordered on the side!

The added curry order
Rich curry served over rice

The curry is delicious just on its own with rice, but placing the crispy grilled gyukatsu on top instantly makes gyukatsu curry 🥩🍛 The rich, smooth curry seeped slightly into the breading, and it paired really well with the savory meat flavor.

Grilled gyukatsu placed on top of the curry

After enjoying it cleanly with salt and wasabi, adding curry midway completely changed the mood of the flavors, making it feel like eating two different dishes in one set. My husband especially loved the curry combo, piling plenty of curry over rice along with the gyukatsu haha.

Finishing the meal with warm rice, clear soup and salad

It wasn't just the gyukatsu that was good — the warm rice and miso soup that came with it were great too. Freshly cooked rice topped with a piece of gyukatsu and a touch of wasabi made for a really satisfying meal.

After eating a good amount of the gyukatsu, we mixed the curry into the rice and finished it off with the remaining meat on top 😋

Salad and side dishes that refresh the palate

Eating the salad and side dishes here and there refreshed the palate, so we could keep enjoying it deliciously down to the last piece. With such a varied set composition, it was much more filling and fun to eat than just gyukatsu alone!

Final verdict: Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok as a couple's dinner near Mapo Station

  • Moist gyukatsu with a lively pink cross-section
  • The fun of grilling it yourself on a personal brazier to your own taste
  • A varied setup with salt, wasabi, and sauce
  • The added curry that paired perfectly with the gyukatsu
  • Convenient access connected to Mapo Station
  • A calm atmosphere good for a quiet meal with my husband

I was satisfied on my last visit too, but this time eating the gyukatsu set with my husband and adding curry made it even better 💛 Grilling each piece ourselves — crispy outside, moist inside — meant we enjoyed it warm the whole meal, and I loved being able to enjoy so many combinations, from clean bites with salt and wasabi to dipping it deep into the curry.

If you're looking for a comfortable place to eat with your partner near Mapo Station, or a tidy Japanese restaurant for a Gongdeok date, I'd recommend Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch 🥩✨
