Unlimited veggie side bar with black pork belly in Jongno: Cham

In short

Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch is a charcoal-grilled black pork restaurant on the 1st floor of the Piccadilly CGV building near Jongno3-ga Station in Seoul. On a weekday evening visit booked via Catchtable, the writer ordered two servings of black pork five-layer pork belly (samgyeopsal) and pork neck (mokssal), grilled tableside by staff, with unlimited refills of every vegetable side dish except minari (water dropwort) from the self-serve bar. The pork belly stole the show, making this a solid pick for a group meal or drinks night out in Jongno3-ga.

Found this place while looking for a barbecue restaurant near Jongno3-ga Station. Visited on a weekday evening — there was a wait, so I booked ahead through Catchtable!

Located on the 1st floor of the Piccadilly CGV theater, so it's also a great spot to hit right after a movie! Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch (참돼짓간 종로본점) — a samgyeopsal (pork belly) spot in Jongno3-ga just 1 minute from Exits 2 and 2-1, and about a 2–3 minute walk from Ikseon-dong.

Checking out the menu — Jirisan black pork and Boseong nokdon

Taking a look at the menu at Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch. You can choose between two pork breeds — Boseong nokdon and Jirisan black pork — and there's a good variety of cuts too. I went all-in on black pork this time, but I'm curious about the Boseong nokdon too.

※Our promise to Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno customers — We use only domestic minari. All vegetable side dishes are unlimited refills (except minari). We use only charcoal. We use quality Jirisan black pork and Boseong nokdon. We use handmade grill plates that don't splatter oil. The best juiciness, with a distinctive rice husk-smoked flavor.

A table full of sides and the unlimited vegetable self-serve bar

After booking ahead, our table was already set up when we arrived.

Grill table set up in advance after reservation

Big table, and it was packed with the grill plate and side dishes. Quite a lot of accompanying sides and basic sauces too. They set the accompanying minari, kimchi, and bean sprouts right on the grill plate for us.

Scallion salad, garlic scapes, lettuce, mushroom wasabi, garlic, and chili peppers are served separately.

Every vegetable is unlimited refill from the self-serve bar (except minari), so this is a barbecue place where you can really load up on veggies! Being able to eat vegetables cooked on the grill, having soaked up all that oil, is just so good!

For sauces: spicy sauce, wasabi, shiitake oyster-wasabi(?), ssamjang (dipping paste), garlic, salt! Watch out for the mushroom wasabi — it's on the spicy side, haha.

Black pork belly — staff grill everything for you

First up, the black pork belly we ordered! Two servings, so two rows. Great cut too — thick, glossy pork belly.

Looked too thick to grill ourselves, but the staff handled it all. Even while busy with a full house, they kept diligently going table to table grilling.

Sliced potatoes come out too, for wrapping the meat in potato.

The grill runs pretty hot, so the meat cooks really fast. Ahh... I want to eat it so badly.

The skill of standing the meat up with tongs to cook the sides too.

Meanwhile, started eating the vegetables that were already nicely cooked.

Looking at the cross-section, still a way to go, but once it's cut and lined up it'll be ready to eat soon, yum yum... drooling while waiting a little longer

Golden-brown, well-cooked pork belly. They set the well-cooked meat down next to the veggies — ready to eat now. Sliced garlic was also sprinkled on to cook nicely in the pork fat. Time to eat the meat!

Looks so good.

Which sauce combos did I go with

Ate the pork belly with the skin still attached, dipped in wasabi + salt, yum. Then again with mushroom wasabi + minari, yum. Kept saying the mushroom wasabi was spicy that day but ate this combo the most, haha. Also wrapped it in a ssam (lettuce wrap), yum.

The kimchi, soaked in all that pork fat, was delicious, and the bean sprouts cooked on the grill had a whole different flavor!

Putting meat on top of well-cooked potato — I approve of this combo! Next up, the pork neck!

How was the black pork neck

Since it's black pork neck, the more fat there is, the chewier and tastier it gets!

Black pork neck on the grill plate

As expected, the black pork neck had lean parts that were tender and fatty parts that were chewy — satisfying in both texture and flavor — but the pork belly's presence was just so strong that day, haha.

Good for what kind of occasion in Jongno3-ga

Really enjoyed the pork belly, haha. That day we ate a ton of vegetables too, not just meat, haha. A barbecue place where you can eat meat in a healthy way!

Being near Jongno3-ga, there were a lot of office workers and foreigners too, and I really appreciated the staff for being so kind even while busy, haha. If you're looking for a group meal spot or a place for drinks in Jongno3-ga, this seems like a solid option.
