After-work gopchang platter for two near Magoknaru Station: Hwang Gop

In short

Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch is a beef gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant set among the office towers near Magoknaru Station in Gangseo, Seoul. Two of us came after work for the assorted platter for two — gopchang, daechang, makchang, heart and chadolbaegi (beef brisket) — plus a complimentary yukhoe (beef tartare) plate, self-serve banchan, and fried rice for 4,000 won to finish. The gopchang was clean-tasting and packed with rich 'gop', and the chadolbaegi grilled in that fat was the highlight.

Title: Fresh gop, that's all you need

First photo from a visit to Hwang Gop, a gopchang restaurant near Magoknaru Station

Somewhere between noon and evening, once the day's tasks are done, I wander through the forest of buildings near Magoknaru Station.

My foodie partner: "You're feeding me gopchang, right?" Me: "Yep... the gopchang you've been singing about for so long." My partner has been going on about beef gopchang forever, and finally, thanks to a good opportunity, we're off to eat it.

Beef gopchang is basically a lifesaver for office workers — rain after a drought.

Evening view of the office buildings near Magoknaru Station

Today our feet led us to Magoknaru Station. Nearby sits a tidy little beef gopchang specialist, 'Hwang Gop.' The warm chatter of office workers on their way home drifts quietly outside, and the air carries a clean, nutty aroma with no off smell at all. "Ooh... let's go in!"

Golden cow statue greeting guests in front of the restaurant

A golden cow statue greets us right in front of the shop. "This month's going to be lucky."

It seems confident enough to be a standard for itself — let's see if that confidence works on me too.

A quick scan of the place: the vibe is clean, and it's already packed with people — a solid sign of a good spot.

Inside Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch: seating and layout

Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch has about 10 tables, each seating four. Clean white and wood tones — honestly, right up my alley.

Clean white and wood-toned interior of the gopchang restaurant

It feels less like a gopchang joint and more like walking into a tidy Western restaurant. "Let's see if the taste is just as clean."

Hwang Gop menu and how to order at the kiosk

As a proper gopchang restaurant, Hwang Gop's signature items are gopchang and gopchang hot pot. Orders go through a kiosk, and we went with the assorted platter for two.

"I'm going to enjoy this 100%."

Self-serve bar in one corner of the restaurant

What's on the self-serve banchan bar

There's also a self-serve bar.

Self-serve banchan including chives, green onion kimchi, and myeong-i namul

From chives to green onion kimchi, all the way to pricey myeong-i namul (mountain garlic leaf) — quite a generous lineup of side dishes. "Nice... they're not skimping."

Plate of side dishes gathered from the self-serve bar

So we piled our plates high. They also give you two sauces on a small dish: a special sauce and sesame oil salt. Honestly, if the meat's fresh and tasty, sesame oil salt alone is plenty. Owner: "Excuse me, coming through."

The free yukhoe (beef tartare) appetizer

And here, they give you yukhoe (beef tartare) as an appetizer.

"Wait, what is this" — I mixed it up right away.

Before the rich, greasy main course of grilled meat arrives, the cold, nutty yukhoe gently wakes up the stomach. Hidden behind the label 'complimentary' is genuinely impressive freshness and seasoning balance. This one small plate alone tells you a lot about how well this place manages its ingredients. "Their gop is probably going to be good..."

What cuts come on the assorted platter for two

Hwang Gop's assorted platter comes with gopchang, daechang, makchang, heart, and chadolbaegi (thinly sliced beef brisket) all together. Chives, mushrooms, and potato get grilled alongside on the griddle.

Finally, sizzling on the griddle, the 'assorted platter' arrives. Gopchang, daechang, makchang, heart, and even chadolbaegi? And the chives, mushrooms, and potato browning in that fat make for a perfect harmony.

What hits your nose first, above all, is a clean, nutty aroma with not even 1% off-smell. "As expected, the classics really are the classics."

Gopchang and heart browning nicely on the griddle

Heart first, then gopchang: the grilling order

First, I pick up a lightly cooked piece of heart and dip it in the sesame oil salt. No metallic bloody taste, just a chewy bite — a strong opening. "That's good??"

Next up, a piece of the main event — the golden-grilled 'beef gopchang.' The cross-section shows it's absolutely packed with rich gop. This time I dip it in the special sauce. "Mmm...~" Places that mishandle gopchang give off that distinctive bitterness or gamey smell, but here it's all savory, clean flavor taking over the mouth. On top of that, the tanginess and spicy cheongyang chili in the special sauce refresh your palate. This firm, nutty quality you can only get from freshness — this is the true essence of 'clean-tasting gop.'

Daechang vs makchang: how the texture differs

Now my chopsticks move to the thick 'daechang' (large intestine) and the chewy 'makchang' (rectum). The outside is crispy while the inside's rich fat just melts away in your mouth. Gone in a flash. "Where'd it go?" Meanwhile the makchang gets firmer and more textured the more you chew, releasing a savory umami.

Ordering the assorted platter was definitely the right call. Each part within one platter brings its own spectrum of texture and savoriness. "Perfect."

And the chadolbaegi, so fresh — dipped generously in sesame oil salt for a bite. A clean, nutty aroma spreads through the mouth. The chadolbaegi's signature rich fat bursts together with the sesame oil salt. "Oh, delicious~"

Side dishes and sauces. And the combination of the platter. So many possible pairings to keep experimenting with. "Feels like a game you never get tired of." As the traces of gopchang, daechang, and chadolbaegi are neatly cleared away, it's time for the ritual that no Korean meal can skip. "Excuse me, one fried rice please."

Finishing with 4,000-won fried rice

Hwang Gop's fried rice is ₩4,000, with a cheese add-on for ₩2,000. You can choose whether to have it fried with the leftover gopchang and fat.

Here you can choose whether to have your fried rice made with the leftover gopchang and its fat. 'Alright, let's dig in.'

Mildly seasoned gopchang fried rice with egg

This isn't fried rice drowned in artificial seasoning or heavy sauce. It's clean and savory thanks to the egg, and while the seasoning looks strong, it's actually pretty mild. "This is charming too...?" The mild yet savory fried rice puts a warm, gentle period at the end of the meal.

Verdict: would I go back to Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch?

'Hwang Gop' feels like the cleanest, most savory, odor-free beef gopchang place I've eaten at recently. (The gopchang was genuinely delicious.) First, the complimentary yukhoe plate gets things off to a great start, and every part in the assorted platter was fresh — especially the 'gopchang' and 'chadolbaegi,' which I personally loved.

The 'gopchang' was packed with odor-free gop, and its clean richness kept lingering the more you chewed. The 'chadolbaegi,' grilled in that same gop fat, hit maximum savoriness — eaten with chives and the special sauce, the flavor practically exploded in the mouth. (Chadolbaegi at a gopchang place? Refreshing.)

Lastly, honestly, the fried rice wasn't quite my personal taste, but instead of sharp, aggressive seasoning, it wrapped things up mild and gentle on the hot plate — the story felt complete either way. If you're looking for a clean, richly-packed gopchang place, come to 'Hwang Gop' near Magoknaru Station. Recommended!!! Food rating: ★★★★
