Cheese naan and butter chicken in Sillim, Seoul: India Darbar

In short

India Darbar Sillim is an authentic Indian restaurant on the second floor of the building next to Baskin Robbins, a 3-minute walk from Sillim Station in Gwanak, Seoul. Trying Indian food for the first time, the writer ordered the signature tandoori chicken at 12,000 won, cheese naan at 5,000 won and butter chicken at 13,500 won, plus a plain lassi and a strawberry lassi, and folded the naan by hand to eat it. The spices at India Darbar were mild rather than sharp, making it an easy first taste of Indian cooking.

Tandoori chicken: how strong are the spices?

A plate of India Darbar's tandoori chicken
Close-up of tandoori chicken fresh from the clay oven

Tandoori chicken, named after the clay oven called a tandoor! India Darbar's tandoori chicken is barbecued after marinating overnight in authentic Indian spices, and it's the kind of signature dish so many people order that I got curious and had to try it myself ☺️

Since it was my first time with authentic Indian food, I had no idea what the spices would even smell like...! The tandoori chicken came out grilled with a clean, light flavor, and the sauce on the outside had a subtle spice aroma that felt novel. To me, the spices weren't overpowering or intense at all — more of a gentle, harmonious blend — so I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to try something different for the first time

A piece of tandoori chicken picked up, showing the tender meat inside

At first glance the meat looked firm, more like chicken breast than something tender, but one bite in, it was completely soft and delicious!

Cheese naan with butter chicken curry

A plate of cheese naan drizzled with honey
Cheese naan and butter chicken curry set on the table together

Cheese naan has cheese stuffed between the layers of naan, plus honey drizzled on top, so you get to taste the cheese + honey + naan combo! It kind of reminded me of eating gorgonzola pizza

It tastes even better eaten together with the butter chicken curry — the curry was richer than I expected, so the pairing with the cheese was totally spot-on 👍🏻

Butter chicken curry piled onto cheese naan

At first I was like, how am I even supposed to eat this? Then my friend next to me said naan is originally meant to be eaten with your hands! So I dug in with my hands too, haha (there's a handwashing space inside the restaurant)

Fold it like pizza and pile the curry on top! I figured I should order at least one curry since I was at an authentic Indian restaurant, and honestly the taste was both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time!

The curry had chicken in it too, and since it also had tomato, there was a subtle tomato flavor coming through 🍅

Plain lassi vs strawberry lassi at India Darbar

Two glasses of plain lassi and strawberry lassi

Lassi is already famous, right? It's a tangy-sweet, yogurt-flavored authentic Indian drink! I'd actually never had lassi before, but I tried it on my friend's recommendation!

I ordered both plain lassi and strawberry lassi, and personally, I found the plain one way tastier! If you like yogurt, you'll absolutely love it, but if you're not really into yogurt, I'd recommend trying a different drink
