Today I've got a story about "Eochongye 1beonji" near Hwagok Station, where I properly stuffed myself with crunchy sesquisi, golden-grilled sashimo smelt, and finished it all off with hot mussel soup. You know those days after work when all you want is a bite of sashimi and a shot of soju? Well, this day I didn't stop at just sashimi — I kept adding grilled dishes and soup one by one, and ended up having a proper drinking session haha🤣 Let's get into it👇

Once inside, the tables were spaced comfortably enough to chat with friends, and the lighting wasn't too bright, giving it that cozy pojangmacha vibe that just makes you want a drink.

The walls were covered here and there with menu photos and posters. Now that we've got a seat, let's pick what to eat!

Menu and prices

You order using the table-order tablet at each table, and pretty much every dish you'd expect at a raw fish restaurant is here — live-fish sashimi like flounder, rockfish, and dotari (flatfish), assorted sashimi, mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), grilled dishes, fried food, and soup.

After some deliberation, our main pick for the day was sesquisi!! And since sashimi alone felt a bit plain, we also ordered grilled sashimo smelt and hot mussel soup.

What comes with the banchan?

While we waited after ordering, the banchan (side dishes) arrived first — seaweed soup, seasoned seaweed, salad, white kimchi, and edamame, a nice light spread to nibble on before the sashimi.

Vinegar-chili sauce and soy sauce set on the table

Each table also had vinegar-chili sauce and soy sauce ready to go. With the banchan out, time for a first round, right? Mixed up some soju and beer, cheers~ ahh🍻

The star of the day: sesquisi

And finally, the sesquisi arrived!!

Unlike typical live-fish sashimi where you just chew soft flesh, sesquisi is thinly sliced with the fine bones left in, giving it that appealing crunchy texture.

I picked up a piece and tried it — the flesh was soft, with the fine bones giving a satisfying crunch here and there, exactly the texture I was hoping for. Dipped it in the salt-oil sauce too — so good.

Second dish: grilled sashimo smelt

While we were still eating sesquisi, the second dish, grilled sashimo smelt, arrived. Golden-grilled sashimo comes whole, easy to eat head to tail.

The outside was golden and crispy, the inside savory and slightly salty, with the roe giving that signature popping texture that sashimo is known for — loved it.

The dipping sauce that came with it had mayo, soy sauce, garlic, and chili mixed in — dip it in and, ugh, this is the ultimate drinking snack🤣

Finishing with hot mussel soup

And then the final dish, mussel soup, showed up~ After sashimi and grilled food, you need something hot and soupy, right?

Bubbling away, the warm mussel soup rounded out a pretty generous spread on the table. One more round with the mussel soup~

After work near Hwagok Station, I properly enjoyed everything from crunchy sesquisi to golden grilled sashimo smelt to hot mussel soup — sashimi, grilled dishes, and soup all in one sitting, and had a proper drink while I was at it.

Final verdict — when to go
