Where Bongu Hwarro is and when it opens
Bongu Hwarro is a charcoal grill restaurant at 76 Bongeunsa-ro 18-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul (Star Palace). It's open 11:00–23:30, Naver reservations are available, and there's a 15% discount for wedding invitation gatherings.
Today I want to share my visit to Bongu Hwarro, one of the places that comes to mind whenever I'm craving meat in Gangnam — a Gangnam Station BBQ restaurant. There are so many good restaurants around Gangnam Station that I always end up debating where to go, but I'd been curious about this place for a while and finally made it there :)
Bongu Hwarro sits between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station (5 minutes from CGV). It's also a quick walk from Exit 11 of Gangnam Station, so accessibility was pretty good. As soon as I arrived, it had that classic charcoal grill restaurant vibe the name promises. Even right in the middle of Gangnam, it had a slightly retro feel typical of a long-running local favorite, which got me excited before I even walked in!

Is Bongu Hwarro good for a Gangnam group meal or company dinner?
The inside of Bongu Hwarro was much bigger than I expected. There were plenty of tables with generous spacing between them, so it seemed good both for a meal with friends and for company dinners or group gatherings. It was slightly busy since I went in the evening, but that only added to the mood — perfect for pairing meat with a drink.

Banchan at Bongu Hwarro, soy-marinated crab included
Banchan
Bongu Hwarro's basic banchan (side dishes) were plentiful — shredded green onion, julienned radish salad, leafy greens for wraps, and various kimchi. Since I'd reserved ahead, the side dishes were already neatly set at the table. Personally, I love the combo of shredded green onion and radish salad with meat, and both were seasoned just right — I kept reaching for them!
What was oddly surprising was that soy-marinated crab (ganjang gejang) came as one of the basic banchan! That's a combination you rarely see at a Korean BBQ restaurant, so it felt refreshingly different. It had no fishy taste at all and was pleasantly salty, so I kept nibbling on it while the meat was cooking 🦀
For this visit, we ordered domestic pork belly + flower pork belly + a 50%-off extra beef short rib cut, doenjang stew with beef brisket, fried rice, cola, and soju.

Pork belly grilled over charcoal
🔥 The highlight of Bongu Hwarro is the grill itself! After a short wait, a warm charcoal brazier arrived at the table. True to the name — Bongu Hwarro literally means 'charcoal grill' — you grill everything yourself right over the charcoal. The moment the meat hit the fire, that distinctive aroma spread and really got my appetite going 🔥 It confirmed my belief that meat just tastes better grilled over charcoal.

Doenjang stew with beef brisket, then fried rice
🍚 In between grilling, I made sure to have some of the doenjang stew with beef brisket and fried rice too. No matter how full you are from meat, you can't skip a spoonful of stew broth and fried rice, right? Hehe. 🤭

The radish salad and shredded green onion were especially good, so I kept going back for more!

Beef short rib cut added at 50% off
🥩 At Bongu Hwarro, once you order one menu item per person, any extra meat is 50% off. Hearing the beef short rib start to sizzle the moment it hit the charcoal was already so satisfying 🔥
I tried the beef short rib grilled just until golden, not overdone, so the juices were still in — it was clean-tasting but had that distinct beefy flavor, layered with a natural charcoal aroma, and I liked it way more than expected. And getting it at 50% off somehow made it taste even better…

Finishing with the free Han River ramyeon
🍜 Another fun detail at Bongu Hwarro — Han River ramyeon comes as a free service item (one free bowl per person!). You cook it yourself at the table, and even though I was already full from the meat, somehow ramyeon still found room to fit in.
The hot, spicy ramyeon broth cut right through the richness of the charcoal-grilled meat, making it the perfect finish 👍
Bongu Hwarro: the verdict
Bongu Hwarro was my pick while looking for a place to eat meat in Gangnam! If you're searching for a charcoal grill restaurant near Gangnam Station, it's worth considering. Between the tasty main meat, the generous banchan spread, and the free Han River ramyeon, this visit had that small, satisfying joy of grilling and eating together ♥
