A Chuseok-weekend rice cake cake for grandmother in Cheongju
It was time to visit my grandmother in Chungbuk, Cheongju. Since visiting on the actual Chuseok holiday was hard, I went the Saturday before instead.
My grandmother loves rice cakes, so I picked up a rice cake cake as a gift from Tteokmidang, a Cheongju rice cake shop.
How far ahead do you have to order a rice cake cake at Tteokmidang?
Rice cake orders anywhere always require a reservation. Since ours was a rice cake cake, we booked 2 days ahead. Tteokmidang said that for smaller quantities, they can sometimes manage it 3–4 hours before pickup on the same day — worth asking.
Tteokmidang location and parking: across from the Lotte Outlet
Tteokmidang, a Cheongju rice cake shop, is close to the Seocheongju tollgate, right across from the Lotte Outlet next to a tire shop. I went to pick it up myself, and it's on a main road that's easy to find with car navigation.
There's a dedicated parking lot in the shop's own building, which is very convenient. The lot is spacious too, so there's always room whenever you visit.
Tteokmidang also does gift rice cakes (dapryetteok) professionally — both bulk and small-quantity reservation orders are possible.
Since Chuseok was coming up, they also had songpyeon (half-moon rice cakes) and gift sets. We got to try some songpyeon the owner gave us as a free extra — and wow, it was so good haha.
Inside Tteokmidang: songpyeon, mini seolgi and pre-ordered rice cakes
Walking inside, there were tons of prepared rice cakes on display. Pretty, colorful songpyeon and all kinds of other rice cakes — since it was Chuseok season, songpyeon was especially plentiful.
Various types of mini seolgi (steamed rice cake) were also lined up. Seolgi is quite trendy these days, and these looked like the real deal. Everything looked neat and pretty overall.
There were also reserved dol seolgi (first-birthday rice cakes) waiting. The white, chewy-looking seolgi looked delicious.
There was also reserved rice cake that looked like injeolmi (soybean-powder rice cake). This place is clearly a popular Cheongju rice cake spot — so many reservations.
We visited around lunchtime, and staff were continuously making rice cakes. Freshly made same-day with fresh ingredients — no wonder it's so good haha.
Tteokmidang menu prices and gift rice cake sets
We had reserved in advance via Naver. I'd recommend checking the menu on Tteokmidang's website first, then reserving by phone.
There was also a full rice cake menu board on site. The gift rice cakes looked clean, pretty, and upscale.
The rice cakes included also come in various seolgi types to choose from. Do rice cakes really come out this pretty these days? My partner and I kept browsing, both amazed.
Prices vary a lot depending on the size and range of the gift set. A reasonable ₩20,000 is the starting price.

We ordered the prettiest-looking rice cake cake. There were so many types of rice cake cakes to choose from haha — we went with the ₩55,000 nutritious chapssal rice cake cake.

There seemed to be quite a lot of rice cake cake reservations. This one wasn't ours, but it looked like a pumpkin assortment cake — the yellow pumpkin rice cake nearby looked delicious too.
Two types of birthday rice cake cakes were also reserved. Much prettier and more upscale than a regular bread cake.
This is the nutritious chapssal rice cake cake we ordered. It had a variety of rice cake types, including injeolmi! The cake shape was so pretty and the size was just right. But taste matters most, right haha? My grandmother ate it with real delight, and we loved it too.
The rice cake cake's packaging box was also neatly done. I'd recommend Tteokmidang for Cheongju gift rice cakes or rice cake cakes!
