If you go looking for bakeries in Yeonnam-dong, there's one name you'll see come up again and again: Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch. I was walking near Yeontral Park and turned into an alley, and there were people lined up in front of the bakery — my feet just stopped naturally.

I like bread in general, so since I was already in Yeonnam-dong, I decided to pick out a few menu items I'd been curious about. This time I brought home garlic baguette, cappuccino bread, onion bagel, and tortilla. There were more varieties than I expected, so I hesitated for a bit — but if it's your first visit, picking a little of everything you're curious about is a fine approach.

How long is the wait at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch?

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam isn't a huge bakery. That's exactly why there was a line out front when I visited — once inside, I understood why. The space itself is pretty cozy, so it feels less like leisurely browsing and more like picking up each bread you want, one by one.

Still, seeing the shelves full of bread gets me a little excited every time, haha. 😆 The garlic baguette in particular looked noticeably different from the other breads even just sitting on the shelf.

Garlic baguette first, as always 🧄

The first thing I picked up at Mandong Jegwa was, of course, the garlic baguette. This tastes a bit different from what you'd expect from a regular baguette. The outside has that classic baguette texture, but toward the center, the garlic sauce has soaked in enough that it's moist and soft.

With one bite you get the garlic aroma, the nutty richness of butter, and the sweet sauce all at once. Especially when I tore the bread apart, you could actually see the sauce soaked into the inside — that was pretty striking. Rather than a hard, chewy baguette, this felt more like bread where you really taste the sauce.

It goes well with coffee, and honestly you just keep reaching for another piece if you tear off bits one at a time. Personally, if it's your first time at Mandong Jegwa, I think this one is worth trying.

Cappuccino bread: better than expected ☕

The second thing I picked was the cappuccino bread. It's covered in a generous dusting of castella-like powder on the outside, so it looked pretty soft even before I tried it. Eating it, the bread itself was fluffy and soft, and inside there was a subtle coffee flavor.

Maybe because I'd just eaten the intensely flavored garlic baguette, the cappuccino bread's mellow sweetness felt even more comforting. That said, quite a bit of powder falls off, so you have to be a little careful while eating it. 😂 If you like coffee, this is a good pairing.

Onion bagel with a surprisingly crisp crust 🧅🥯

One of the breads I personally had the most fun eating was the onion bagel. Usually when you think 'bagel,' you picture a chewy, dense texture. But this one had a fairly crispy outer texture, which was a bit unexpected the first time I bit in.

Inside there's onion cream cheese, and the sharp bite of onion cuts through the usual heaviness of cream cheese. Combined with the bagel's crispy texture, every bite was fun. After eating sweet bread after sweet bread, mixing in something savory and salty like this was so much better.

Tortilla, picked for something more than plain bread 🌯

The last thing I picked up was the tortilla. After eating sweet or rich breads back to back like the garlic baguette and cappuccino bread, I was craving something savory and cooked. The tortilla had sausage, onion, and cheese inside, and worked fine as a full snack.

It's not a particularly flashy item — more like a familiar pizza-bread flavor — so it was easy and unfussy to eat. It did a good job resetting my palate in between the sweet breads.

How to pick several breads at Mandong Jegwa 🥖

Looking back at the four breads I tried this time, each had its own slightly different appeal.

• Cappuccino bread: a good match if you like soft, sweet bread
• Onion bagel: notable for its crispy texture and onion cream cheese combo
• Tortilla: a savory cooked bread that's great to slip in between sweet breads

Personally, I had a lot of fun buying several kinds at once and sharing them at home over coffee, one bread at a time. There are so many good spots in Yeonnam-dong, but if you like bread, I think this is a place worth stopping by after a meal while walking the alleys. Especially if you're planning a Yeonnam-dong bakery crawl, I think the garlic baguette alone is enough to make you curious enough to try it.

I found myself wondering whether it's really worth going all the way to Yeonnam-dong just for bread — but once I actually poured a warm cup of coffee and started tearing off pieces of the garlic baguette one by one, I got it: 'ah, so this is why people keep coming here.' That's Mandong Jegwa for you.
