Kanto-style eel rice bowl with pickled radish at Manmok, Gangnam

In short

Manmok is a Kanto-style eel rice bowl restaurant a 5-minute walk from Seonleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The writer ordered the whole-eel rice bowl (₩39,000), which came with salad, chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), soup, pickled radish salad, and ice cream for dessert, with seasoning light enough that the eel's own savoriness and charcoal aroma came through. Anyone looking for a proper eel rice bowl lunch around Daechi-dong or Seonleung should try Manmok.

I went searching for a really properly-made eel rice bowl and ended up at Manmok !!! 🤤 I love eel rice bowls in general, and among Japanese-style eel bowls I wanted one where the seasoning isn't overpowering and the eel's own flavor and charcoal aroma really come through, so I decided to visit ✨

Even though it's in Korea, it feels like a modern take on a traditional Japanese eel restaurant !!

The interior was calm and upscale overall, with deep wood tones layered with brown. Soft lighting and leather sofas came together for a cozy feel, and Japanese-style decor throughout gave it exactly the mood you'd want from an eel rice bowl restaurant. From the exterior to the interior, it's a space that reworks a traditional feel into something sleek, so I was already loving the atmosphere before the food even arrived 🤎

You know the basic sign of a good restaurant, right..? Even the water was good

It's not just the eel rice bowl on its own — salad and chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard) come alongside it. That combination made me happier than I expected.

A bowl of smooth chawanmushi

The chawanmushi was smooth with deep umami, so it was great to eat alongside the eel.

Soup with large chunks of mushroom

The soup that comes with the eel rice bowl was nice to sip between bites, and I loved that the mushrooms were big !!

The Kanto-style eel rice bowl — how did it taste?

What I ordered was the whole eel rice bowl. A whole eel is laid on top, so it was satisfying visually the moment it arrived. Glossy, glistening eel laid neatly over the rice — the visual was seriously insane !!! 🫢

Manmok's glossy whole eel rice bowl

Manmok cooks it Kanto-style, a preparation that lets the eel's own flavor shine through — the surface was grilled to a nice golden brown, and I liked that the sauce wasn't overly sweet or salty.

Kanto-style eel grilled golden on the surface

You taste the eel's own savory, clean flavor first, and the sauce's umami follows gently behind it. When the sauce is too strong, all you remember afterward is the sauce, even when eating rice and eel together — but at Manmok, the eel's own flavor really came through !!

An unexpectedly delightful touch: the pickled radish salad

And personally, one thing that surprised me at Manmok was the pickled radish salad that came with it !! No matter how good an eel rice bowl is, at some point you crave something spicy, tangy, and crunchy in between bites, and the pickled radish did exactly that job. A bite of it between the eel's rich, savory flavors cleared my palate and made the eel taste good all over again !! (honorary Korean^^)

Everyone, take a big bite ~

I thought a whole eel rice bowl might be too much for me, but the eel goes so well with the rice that I just kept eating. If you love eel, I'd also recommend ordering the one-and-a-half serving option !!!!! ✨

Just looking at the photos makes me want to eat it again 🤤🤤

Dessert ice cream — choose matcha or black tea

After scraping the bowl completely clean, ice cream comes out at the end of the meal for dessert.

You can choose between matcha and black tea, so we each picked one. I went with matcha, my husband went with black tea, and both were a clean, satisfying way to finish the meal.

Final verdict

✔️ Final verdict — Manmok's Kanto-style eel rice bowl lets the eel's natural flavor shine through: the eel was soft and savory with real charcoal aroma, and it balanced well with the rice. Genuinely amazing. What I loved most was the whole spread, from salad to steamed egg to pickled radish salad to the final ice cream. I'd recommend Manmok's eel rice bowl as a Daechi-dong lunch spot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
