No-wait 7:30pm dinner at a Yeoksam Chinese restaurant: Jjamppong Jijon

In short

Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch is a Chinese restaurant about a 7-minute walk from Yeoksam Station (Line 2) in Gangnam, Seoul. At 7:30pm there was no wait at Jjamppong Jijon, the food arrived in what felt like 5 to 7 minutes, the sujebi (hand-torn dough) jjamppong was full of smoky wok flavor, rice came with free refills, and the glutinous rice sweet and sour pork was mild enough even for spice-shy eaters. A filling, fast weeknight meal near Yeoksam Station.

It's been a while, so I went back to Jjamppong Jijon. Here's my review of the Yeoksam branch, starting now

It's about a 7-minute walk from Yeoksam Station on Line 2, and parking was available!

Was there a wait at 7:30pm, and how fast did the food arrive?

No wait as of 7:30pm

On a weekday evening there was no separate wait at all. The food came out really fast, so I thought it would also be good for lunchtime. It felt like it arrived in about 5-7 minutes after ordering.

Menu board listing cooked dishes and meal items at Jjamppong Jijon

Along with dishes like kkanpung shrimp, fried eggplant, and sweet and sour pork, the cooked-dish lineup was solid. The meal menu also had a good range — sujebi (hand-torn dough), rice noodle, and soft tofu versions of jjamppong all use different ingredients, giving each a distinct feel, so there were quite a lot of choices.

The interior was clean and comfortable overall. With built-in sofa seating plus a mix of 2-seat and 4-seat tables and a quick table turnover, it looked like it could easily handle group meals too.

Self-serve bar with side dishes and utensils

You could freely use the self-serve bar for side dishes like pickled radish, onion, jajai, and domestic kimchi, as well as utensils like tongs, scissors, and small plates.

How does the sujebi jjamppong taste?

First up, the sujebi jjamppong with its lovely chewy texture. It was full of smoky wok flavor, almost like eating it back in China — and sure enough, it turns out the head chef is Chinese! Most of the other customers were Chinese too, so I figured they must have come knowing about his skills haha. The portions were generous, packed with vegetables and plenty of seafood too.

This dish was also loaded with ingredients. And since the rice is free refills, I could eat as much as I wanted.

How spicy is the glutinous rice sweet and sour pork?

Glutinous rice sweet and sour pork with chili sauce base

Maybe because of the glutinous rice batter, it stretched chewily, and being chili-sauce based it had a nice savory depth. It's mild enough that even spice-shy eaters can enjoy it, so I'd recommend this dish.
