Eulwangri family restaurant with a garden terrace: Haesanggung

Last weekend we took a family trip out to Yeongjong Island and stopped by Haesanggung, a Yeongjong restaurant everyone recommends. Whenever we eat out with the kids the menu usually ends up being all about them, so on days when mom and dad are craving something spicy we usually just suck it up — but this time Haesanggung had a menu that worked for both the grown-ups and the kids, which I loved.

Where is Haesanggung, and what are its hours and parking?

Haesanggung is at 411 Marisan-ro, Eulwangri, Yeongjong-gu, Incheon, with parking for up to 30 cars in front of and beside the restaurant. Having a spacious lot right there meant zero parking stress, which I really appreciated.

A weekend lunch on the terrace while the kids play in the garden

As expected, Haesanggung was packed at weekend lunch time. Still, because there's outdoor terrace seating in addition to the indoor hall, we were seated and eating right away with no wait.

There's also an outdoor terrace and a garden, which was great for eating in the breeze on a day with weather this nice. This terrace-loving mom immediately dashed over to claim a terrace table!

Thanks to that, while we waited for the food the kids happily ran around the garden out back, and we got to sit for a bit, catch the breeze, and just relax.

It's a set that lets you try stir-fried octopus, whole octopus pancake, seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), and turmeric rice all at once, which made it perfect as a family dinner out on Yeongjong Island.

Haesanggung is a genuinely solid restaurant — they make their own basic banchan (side dishes) and kimchi in house. Extra banchan is available from a self-serve bar.

The whole-octopus green onion pancake, and why the kids ate it

This place apparently won the grand prize for stir-fried octopus and octopus pancake at the Incheon Jung-gu Local Specialty Food Competition, so my husband and I — both big fans of stir-fried octopus and pancakes — started the meal with pretty high expectations. First up was the dish I was most excited for: the whole octopus pancake! A whole plump octopus laid across the top made it visually striking right away. There were shrimp tucked in between the octopus legs too, and the pancake itself was crispy and savory, so even the kids ate more of it than I expected. The octopus wasn't chewy in a tough way — it was springy and tender, so the texture was great too.

How spicy is the stir-fried octopus? With somyeon noodles and turmeric rice

The main dish, stir-fried octopus, had a faint smoky char and proper spiciness. The octopus pieces were big and springy but still tender to bite into, so I kept going back for more. Apparently they don't use artificial capsaicin — the sauce is made by aging gochugaru (red pepper flakes), garlic, and other ingredients together — which might be why the heat felt like it woke up your appetite rather than just being harsh. They can also adjust the spice level, so it should be fine to bring along someone who can't handle spicy food.

Somyeon (thin wheat noodles) also came with it, so mixing it into the sauce, and then mixing bean sprouts and stir-fried octopus into the turmeric rice — that's genuinely dangerous for how much rice it makes you eat.

And the pretty yellow turmeric rice was a treat too. It's not just plain white rice, so the color alone caught the kids' interest, and they seemed to have fun with it and ate well, which made me proud :)

Seafood kalguksu to cool down the spice

Since we were by the sea, seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) was a must. Loaded with clams, mussels, and other seafood, the broth was clean and refreshing, and the noodles were nice and springy — a spoonful of the broth in between bites of the stir-fried octopus completely reset the spice.

Haesanggung as a stop on a Yeongjong seaside day out

Best of all, it's close to Eulwangri Beach, Seonyeobawi Beach, Wangsan Beach, and Marisan Beach, so it works well as a stop on a Yeongjong drive or beach outing. If you're doing a family meal with the kids but mom and dad are really craving something spicy, I'd recommend Haesanggung on Yeongjong — you can enjoy stir-fried octopus, seafood kalguksu, and whole octopus pancake all in one sitting. Thanks to this meal, our Yeongjong family outing was complete. :)
