Seocho tteokbokki restaurant packed to eat at home for two: Deokjane
In short
Deokjane Bangatgan is a tteokbokki and gimbap restaurant between Sinnonhyeon and Gangnam stations in Seocho, Seoul. Stopping by alone, the writer packed 1 tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and 2 tuna gimbap (seaweed rice rolls) to eat at home with his wife, and the chewy long garaetteok-style rice cakes went well with the deep, rich sauce. The portion suited two people, and eating slowly at home was better than rushing a meal in the shop.

Sometimes tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) just pops into your head out of nowhere. That's what happened to me — I had some errands near Sinnonhyeon Station, and while I was wondering what to eat, I suddenly remembered a well-known tteokbokki spot near Sinnonhyeon Station.

There happened to be a place nearby I'd been curious about for a while, so this time instead of eating in the store, I packed it up to take home.
That place is Deokjane Bangatgan (덕자네방앗간). I went alone and just grabbed a simple takeout order, but since I planned to eat with my wife once I got home, I made sure to pack one tteokbokki and two tuna gimbap rolls.

If you've been looking for a solid tteokbokki spot near Sinnonhyeon Station, I figured this review might be useful, so here's how it went.

Where is Deokjane Bangatgan, and is it close to Sinnonhyeon Station?
Deokjane Bangatgan sits between Sinnonhyeon and Gangnam stations, so it wasn't hard to find from Sinnonhyeon Station. The name itself has a slightly old-school snack-restaurant feel, and the actual vibe matched — an easygoing spot to stop by for tteokbokki or gimbap.

Since I was visiting alone that day, I went with takeout rather than sitting and eating for a long time in the store.

I briefly considered just packing one tteokbokki, but thinking about eating with my wife at home, I added the tuna gimbap too.

In the end I packed one tteokbokki and two tuna gimbap rolls — a combination that turned out to be just right for two people.

Why Deokjane Bangatgan's tteokbokki uses garaetteok-style rice cakes
When I got home and opened up the takeout, the shape of the rice cakes was clearly different from typical tteokbokki. They were long, garaetteok-style rice cakes, and the presence of the rice cake itself was noticeable at a glance.
Personally, I care quite a bit about rice cake texture when eating tteokbokki, and these thick rice cakes definitely delivered on the chewing satisfaction.

Taking a bite, the outside had soaked up the sauce nicely while the inside kept a chewy texture alive. Unlike thin tteokbokki rice cakes where you mostly just taste the sauce, this style let you actually enjoy chewing the rice cake itself.

My wife tried it too and said the rice cakes were noticeably thicker than usual tteokbokki rice cakes, which made the texture more fun.

How the sauce tasted with the chewy rice cakes
The rice cakes weren't the only good part at Deokjane Bangatgan. Tteokbokki ultimately comes down to the sauce, and overall the sauce flavor was rich while still pairing really well with the rice cakes.

Picking up one rice cake, there was plenty of sauce coating the surface, so every bite brought the sauce flavor along with it.

It had a spicy kick without being overwhelmingly hot, which kept me reaching for more.

Eating at home, I alternated between the tteokbokki and the gimbap, and the combination worked better than I expected.

Take a bite of this well-known Sinnonhyeon Station tteokbokki, then a bite of gimbap, and the gimbap's plain, clean flavor balanced things out in between, so I could eat a lot without getting tired of it.

What tteokbokki takeout is like eaten at home
Eating right there in the store is great too, but packing it up and eating at home like this day was also pretty good.
I stopped by Deokjane Bangatgan alone just to grab takeout, then sat down comfortably with my wife at home. Laying out the warm tteokbokki and gimbap, it turned into a simple little snack spread. Haha.

What I especially liked about eating at home was not being rushed — we could chat slowly while eating. Talking with my wife about this and that, before I knew it the tteokbokki was almost gone.
Next time, I thought it might be nice to visit together with my wife from the start and eat right there in the store.
Honest verdict on Deokjane Bangatgan takeout for two
This time I tried Deokjane Bangatgan as takeout, and the tteokbokki-and-tuna-gimbap combo worked better than I expected.

The long garaetteok-style rice cakes gave a noticeably different texture from the tteokbokki I usually eat, and the sauce paired well with the rice cakes, making for a tasty meal.

Most of all, taking it home to eat with my wife felt more relaxed and enjoyable than rushing through a solo meal in the store.

I ordered one tteokbokki and two tuna gimbap rolls, and the amount seemed just right for two people to share.

Next time, takeout is nice, but if I have a chance to go to Sinnonhyeon with my wife, I'd like to visit the store directly and try some other menu items too.

If you're craving a snack meal near Sinnonhyeon Station, or if you like garaetteok-style tteokbokki, give Deokjane Bangatgan a look next time you're searching for a well-known tteokbokki spot near Sinnonhyeon Station.

This time I tried Deokjane Bangatgan as takeout,

and next time I'm planning to eat in the store together with my wife. Haha.
