Gangnam Station Korean restaurant for a rainy day: Dakgalbijeon

In short

Dakgalbijeon Gangnam Branch is a dakgalbi (Korean stir-fried chicken) and potato pancake restaurant on the 2nd floor of Gangnam Diobil in Seocho, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Sinnonhyeon Station Exit 9. Craving potato pancake on a rainy day, the writer and a friend ordered the gamjachidak set for two at 40,000 won and wrapped cheese dakgalbi in perilla-leaf potato pancakes, with the salty sauce mellowed by the pancake. The set alone filled up two people, so the fried rice at Dakgalbijeon was saved for the next visit.

What is in the 40,000 won gamjachidak set for two?

Since we came specifically for dakgalbi and potato pancake, there was really no other choice than the gamjachidak (potato pancake and cheese dakgalbi) 2-person set. Might as well go with cheese for extra deliciousness, right?!

Oh, quick note — if you want to add noodles, you need to order them in advance, so mention it when you order the dakgalbi.

I heard Dakgalbijeon uses only chicken thigh meat that's hand-trimmed fresh every day. They use a special sauce without gochujang (red chili paste) for a deeper flavor, so I was curious how that would actually taste. I was looking forward to seeing how dakgalbi and potato pancake would pair together.

1. Cheese dakgalbi at Dakgalbijeon

The cheese dakgalbi arrived first. It came already cooked, so we could dig in right away. Just stir it as the cheese melts:)

There's so much cheese piled on that it stretches beautifully every time you stir it, can you see??! Cheese dakgalbi really is the truth when it comes to dakgalbi.

The sauce wasn't spicy, but it did have a slight saltiness. This seemed like the kind of thing that would go perfectly wrapped in rice or potato pancake. (Is this the owner's grand scheme to get you to order potato pancake..?)

The perilla-leaf potato pancake worth a rainy day

The potato pancake showed up next. I was overwhelmed by its size — it covered the whole plate — and since I'd been really looking forward to potato pancake on a rainy day, my chopsticks kept reaching for it. Overall the potato pancake had a soft, chewy texture rather than crispy, so it was easy to bite into.

Potato pancake large enough to cover the plate

Usually a jeon (pan-fried dish) tastes heavily of oil since it's deep-fried, but this potato pancake had a fragrant aroma when eaten with perilla leaf.

Best way to eat it: dakgalbi wrapped in potato pancake

But the absolute best..!! was wrapping the dakgalbi in the potato pancake!! The dakgalbi + potato pancake combo is something you can only get at Dakgalbijeon — the dakgalbi sauce could easily be a bit too intense on its own, but the potato pancake mellowed it out so it went down smoothly.

Dakgalbijeon is also running a nostalgic lucky draw event, a Naver receipt review event, and a women-only table event..! The one that caught my eye was the nostalgic lucky draw event haha. You can enter by following the store on Naver and saving it. (I'll try that one next time...)

Who should eat at Dakgalbijeon Gangnam Branch?

It felt fresh to eat dakgalbi in a new way, in a space that felt like an indoor street stall. Before ordering, we absolutely planned to get fried rice too, but the dakgalbi + potato pancake set alone filled us up so much we never got to it — I do regret that a little. If I come back, I want to clear the fried rice this time too.

  • Anyone who wants to try the dakgalbi and potato pancake combination
