Nowon gamjatang for three with ugeoji sari and fried rice: Somunnan
In short
Somunnan Gamjatang is a gamjatang (pork bone stew) restaurant near Sangye Station in Nowon, Seoul, in the same spot since 1995. On a rainy weekday evening, a family of three ordered the small gamjatang with an extra serving of ugeoji (outer cabbage leaves), then finished with the included hand-torn dumpling sari and fried rice topped with plenty of perilla seed powder. Somunnan Gamjatang is a good call when you want one hearty, steaming bowl to fill you up.

As the weather's been getting chillier lately, I kept craving something with hot broth, so this time I went to Somunnan Gamjatang Haejangguk :) I love gamjatang so much!!!! Why is it so good. Found a truly standout gamjatang place 💡 Went with my family to eat gamjatang. Eating out is always great!!
What kind of place is Somunnan Gamjatang in Nowon?
Somunnan Gamjatang's Junggye branch has apparently been running since 1995. We parked and walked into the restaurant. Since it's been loved in the same spot for so long, there were quite a lot of customers when we visited.
The look of the restaurant from the street
The sign alone smells like a good restaurant! A red sign with the marks of time!

It was raining that day, so I was craving something even warmer with broth!

There's also a model restaurant badge.

Inside Somunnan Gamjatang and the best time to go
The inside was quite spacious. I visited on a weekday evening, and after a little while, the place started filling up.

Is the small gamjatang enough for three people?
At Somunnan Gamjatang's Junggye branch, we ordered the small gamjatang for three people and added cabbage sari, and the portion was plenty. We thought about ordering the medium, but haha, even the small is a lot! Looking at the menu, the signature dishes are of course gamjatang and bone haejangguk. The rich, deep broth paired with tender meat made for a warm, satisfying meal.

The kimchi here is amazing too!

They didn't hold back on the perilla seed powder! As someone who really loves perilla, I was so happy 😁 Thank you!!

How were the gamjatang broth and the pork?
Looks incredibly good, right? It really was too :-) The gamjatang broth in particular wasn't overly harsh but had a savory depth that kept me spooning it up, and the meat on the bones was plentiful and satisfying.

Picking the meat off the gamjatang bones~~ and the broth has such deep, spicy richness!

Lots of customers ordering takeout too. Delivery riders kept coming in and there were plenty of pickup customers as well.

Dumpling sari was included too, so we tore off pieces and added them in.

Is the fried rice finish worth ordering?
At Somunnan Gamjatang's Junggye branch, you absolutely must get the fried rice. They loaded it generously with perilla seed powder too!!

I'm a fried rice lover haha. There's no way you could look at this photo and not want to eat it, my stomach's growling already!

Besides gamjatang, they also have sundae-guk, blood sausage haejangguk, samgyetang, and other menu items, so it's nice that you can pick based on your taste. Personally, I think this is a great place to visit when you're craving hot broth in weather like this. If you're looking for gamjatang or bone haejangguk for a hearty meal, it's worth a visit :)
