With the holidays coming up, I randomly started craving chewy rice cakes. I like rice cakes in general, and I like keeping a few in the freezer for when I'm hungry, so I ordered some songpyeon (half-moon rice cakes) as a snack.
The place I ordered from was Tteokmidang, a rice cake shop in Bihadong, Cheongju. Besides songpyeon, they make all kinds of rice cakes — baekseolgi (steamed white rice cake), thank-you rice cakes, rice cake cakes, and more. This time I ordered the colorful songpyeon.
Songpyeon has a strong image as a holiday food, but I actually like it enough to crave it any time. I especially love the combo of chewy rice cake skin and nutty sesame filling, which goes surprisingly well with coffee or tea haha.

Sesame songpyeon ordered as an everyday snack
What I ordered this time was songpyeon! It's often thought of as a holiday-only food, but I like it enough that I crave it sometimes even on ordinary days.
I especially love the combination of the chewy rice cake skin and the nutty sesame filling that's typical of songpyeon, so I ordered with high expectations again.

When I got the rice cakes, the bright colors caught my eye first — they were really pretty and generously portioned. The round shapes were cute and the colors were so pretty that laid out in the box, they looked even more appetizing than I expected. I ended up taking a bunch of photos before eating lol. They say food that looks good tastes good too.
Bojagi wrapping and how the songpyeon tastes
At Tteokmidang, gifts and thank-you rice cakes can come wrapped in bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth). The bojagi cost is charged separately.
When I put a songpyeon on a plate and cut it in half, the inside was packed with nutty sesame filling. The rice cake skin was soft and chewy — really good. Taking a bite, the chewy skin and nutty filling went well together, and the sweetness wasn't overdone, so it was easy to keep eating without feeling weighed down. The more I chewed, the chewier and nuttier it got, and it paired nicely with coffee too.
Who is Tteokmidang best for?
If you're looking for everyday rice cakes in Cheongju, Tteokmidang is worth a try, and if you need a batch of rice cakes for an event or gathering, it also works well as a thank-you rice cake shop.
