Yeonnam bakery Naver pickup and Emmental cheese bread: Mandong Jegwa

In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a takeout-focused bakery at 32 Yeonhui-ro in Seodaemun, Seoul, a 7–10 minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station. On this return visit the signature garlic baguette (about 6,000 won) came with angkeurimppang (red bean cream bread), Emmental cheese bread and an onion bagel, and weekday pickup reservations through the Naver app worked as promised. Mandong Jegwa has almost no seats and popular breads are mostly gone by 3pm, so go in the morning or around lunch.

It's been a while since my last visit... this is my Mandong Jegwa post.

Walking through the quiet alleys of Yeonnam-dong in Seoul, you'll come across Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, a bakery that catches your eye with its stylish exterior. It's a hot bakery that pops up often on social media these days, so I had high expectations before visiting. Here's my honest review.

Where is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch, and what is the shop like?

Mandong Jegwa sits about a 7–10 minute walk from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station, right at the entrance to Yeonhui-ro. The exterior has a modern yet warm glass-window structure — the kind of stylish space that makes you think "this place is different" even just passing by.

The interior isn't very large, but the bread display case is packed full, so you can take in the variety of menu items at a glance. It's run as a takeout-focused spot inside — coffee isn't sold separately, and since there's nowhere to sit, some customers unwrap their bread right out front! The staff were friendly, and they kept offering samples of certain breads, so even first-time visitors could pick things out without much pressure.

Garlic baguette, red bean cream bread and Emmental cheese bread: taste and prices

Mandong Jegwa's signature item is, without question, the garlic baguette. The outside is crispy and the inside is moist, soaked through with butter and garlic sauce — one bite and the fragrance spreads. The garlic flavor is strong but not overwhelming, and the balance of savory and sweet-salty was excellent. Even a single piece is quite filling, and I understood right away why people say "one bread can be this satisfying."

Another popular item, the red bean cream bread, has an impressive combination of red bean paste and cream cheese. It's not too sweet, blending smoothly together, and went well with coffee. The Emmental cheese bread has a strong cheese aroma and a salty punch, recommended for anyone who likes savory-salty flavors, and the onion bagel was distinctively crispier than a regular bagel.

Each bread let the natural flavor of its ingredients shine, and overall I felt a refined texture and richness. Price-wise, by premium bakery standards, the garlic baguette runs about ₩6,000 and the cream breads are in the ₩3,000–4,000 range. It might feel a bit pricey, but the quality makes sense once you taste it.

Mandong Jegwa visiting tips: sellout times and Naver pickup booking

Mandong Jegwa draws a crowd right from opening, so items sell out fast. Popular menu items are mostly gone by 3pm, so the best time to visit is in the morning or around lunchtime.

Since there's almost no in-store seating, you'll mostly be taking bread to go, and I often saw people enjoying their bread at nearby cafés. The garlic baguette especially tastes best eaten right after purchase. If you have leftovers, heating it in an air fryer at 180°C for about 5 minutes brings back that freshly-baked crispness.

On weekdays, you can also make pickup reservations through the Naver app, so securing your desired items ahead of time lowers the chance of disappointment.

Is Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch worth the trip?

If you're planning a bakery-hopping trip around Yeonnam-dong, Mandong Jegwa is worth a visit. It felt less about flashy visuals and more about honest ingredients and well-executed flavor. The garlic baguette in particular was impressive enough to call a life-changing bread, and the red bean cream and cheese breads were also top-notch.

That said, the small store size and how quickly popular items sell out are a bit of a letdown. Still, even that inconvenience felt like proof this is "a place that bakes bread properly."

If you're walking through Yeonnam-dong and get pulled in by the smell of fresh bread, stop for a moment and check out Mandong Jegwa. The moment you take that first bite, you'll immediately understand why it's so popular. ☕
