Yeonhui-ro takeout bakery with a 3-person entry rule: Mandong Jegwa

In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a takeout-only bakery at 32 Yeonhui-ro in Seodaemun, Seoul, known across the Yeonhui-dong and Yeonnam-dong area for its garlic baguette. The interior is small, so a notice asks groups of 3 or fewer to enter at a time, there is no parking, and the garlic baguette has to be requested separately at the register. Of the five breads bought — garlic baguette, kaya coconut, yakbap pound cake (sweet rice cake loaf), bottom bread, and salty soboro — the garlic baguette won, with a moist inside and a sweet-and-salty sauce.

There are so many famous cafés and restaurants between Yeonhui-dong and Yeonnam-dong, but among them, Mandong Jegwa is a name that keeps coming up with people who love bread. Finding a famous bakery in Yeonhui-dong

Mandong Jegwa isn't a flashy, large-scale bakery — it felt more like a place focused purely on the bread itself. Even from outside, it had that distinct bakery atmosphere that made it hard to just walk past. The exterior felt like a traditional bakery that's been around for decades, quite different from the usual bakeries I go to. It's also a great spot to stop by for a few takeout breads while strolling through Yeonhui-dong or Yeonnam-dong on a date!

Parking, entry limit and reservations at Mandong Jegwa

There's a no-parking notice at the entrance of Mandong Jegwa, and here's a handy tip: you can take your bread to the nearby Ediya, order a drink, and eat it there! They also accept weekday reservations, which seems worth using.

The interior of Mandong Jegwa is a bit small, so there was also a notice asking groups of 3 or fewer to enter.

Once inside, the bread was displayed individually wrapped in plastic.

Just as the sign said, it really is a small, takeout-focused bakery shop. I noticed foreign visitors kept coming in steadily to buy bread. I was able to browse comfortably once the crowd thinned out a bit.

Neatly arranged — a place with a good feel to it.

Even in the early afternoon, so much bread had sold out that I grabbed the last yakbap bread haha

The garlic baguette is so popular that there's apparently no time to wrap it in advance, so I had to ask for it separately at the register.

How does the Mandong Jegwa garlic baguette taste?

Mandong Jegwa's signature garlic baguette, packaged

Garlic baguette, 7.0. This is the most popular bread, so of course I got one. 🥖 Mandong Jegwa really does mean garlic baguette. If you've come this far, you can't skip it. When people say 'garlic bread,' they usually picture a crispy exterior with a strong garlic smell, but Mandong Jegwa's garlic baguette was a bit different.

The garlic sauce had soaked well between the layers of the baguette, so the outside kept that distinct baguette texture while the inside was remarkably moist and soft. The first bite hits with a sweet, salty flavor, followed by a rush of that distinct garlic aroma. Rather than the garlic sharpness jumping out too much, it blends with the nutty richness of butter and a sweet sauce, and I kept reaching for more.

"Ah, so this is why Mandong Jegwa is known for its garlic baguette."

After tasting it, I understood why, to some extent.

Yakbap pound cake, bottom bread and the rest of the 5 breads

What I bought at Mandong Jegwa was garlic baguette, kaya coconut, yakbap pound cake, bottom bread, and salty soboro — 5 items in total.

Five kinds of bread purchased at Mandong Jegwa
Mandong Jegwa's yakbap pound cake topped with sunflower seeds and grains

I bought this bread out of curiosity because it's described as a meeting point between yakbap (sweet rice) and bread. The sunflower seeds and grain sesame on top, along with the cinnamon flavor I know from yakbap, turned into bread that tasted hearty and refined. Nutty, and the bread was moist yet dense like a proper pound cake. Something older folks would enjoy too.

Mandong Jegwa's bottom bread filled with milk cream

I wondered why it was named 'bottom bread,' but seeing it, it was white and round like a baby's bottom — pretty cute. Once I tore it open, there was milk cream inside, soft, with chewy bread — a cream bread flavor kids would absolutely love!!

Is Mandong Jegwa worth the trip? Final verdict

Now I understand why Mandong Jegwa keeps coming up as a must-visit bakery in Yeonhui-dong! In particular, the signature garlic baguette's combination of garlic flavor, sweet and nutty sauce, and moist bread was quite impressive. If you love garlic bread, this is a menu worth trying at least once.
