Mapo Station gyukatsu restaurant with a 4-step eating guide: Gyudo
In short
Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a premium gyukatsu (beef cutlet) restaurant on the first basement level of the Hanwha Obelisk building by Mapo Station in Seoul. On a weekday evening after work, the writer ordered one gyukatsu set and one yakiniku set and ate them through the restaurant's four-step manual — grilling the meat, onsen egg rice, pot rice, then sungnyung (scorched rice tea) — and a manager relit the brazier the moment its flame died near the end of the meal. For anyone who wants to taste gyukatsu several different ways in one sitting, Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a solid choice.

This time I visited Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch on a weekday evening.

At first I thought you just grilled the gyukatsu and that was it, but it turned out you could enjoy the set in several ways — grilling the meat, onsen egg rice, pot rice, and finally sungnyung. It was a surprisingly varied and satisfying dinner, all from a single gyukatsu order.
Where is Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch, and what is the room like?
Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is located in the basement of the Hanwha Obelisk building. The way down can be a bit confusing the first time, but once you're inside, the atmosphere is pretty upscale.

The lighting is on the dim side overall, with a mix of seating including 4-person tables. I visited on a weekday evening after work, and I saw both office worker groups and families dining, which gave me the sense this is a popular dinner spot. The calm atmosphere would also make it a good choice for a family meal or a blind date near Mapo Station.
Gyukatsu set or yakiniku set: which one was better?
That day I ordered one gyukatsu set and one yakiniku set at Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch. Both come as full set meals, so each was quite filling on its own — personally, I liked the gyukatsu more!

That day I ordered one gyukatsu set and one yakiniku set.

Since both come as full sets, either one makes for a pretty substantial meal.

Personally, I liked the gyukatsu more! And the fun of a Gyudo set is that you're not just grilling meat — there's a whole eating manual!

The 4 steps for eating a Gyudo set
Step 1: Grilling the gyukatsu and yakiniku

First, you can grill the meat at the table to your preferred doneness.
The gyukatsu in particular was great lightly seared on the outside and eaten warm — good texture, and you can cook it to your own taste.

The yakiniku cooked pretty quickly too, and the tender flavor was outstanding!
Step 2: Mixing egg rice with the onsen egg

The onsen egg comes with soy sauce, so you can turn it into soy sauce egg rice. Eaten alongside the meat, the soft egg adds a whole different feel.
Step 3: Eating it as pot rice

Instead of just eating the rice plain, you can turn the leftover rice into pot rice.

You get to choose your broth at the self-bar like this. Being able to customize the pot rice to your taste was a nice touch.
Step 4: Finishing with sungnyung (scorched rice tea)
Pour broth over the rice left in the pot to finish it off as sungnyung!

There's a packet for making sungnyung tucked into the drawer in front of your seat like this (I didn't try it myself, though...). Going from meat, to egg rice, to pot rice, to sungnyung within a single set meal made the whole meal feel really substantial. It also struck me that if you're dining solo near Mapo Station, ordering just one set here lets you enjoy several different ways of eating.
The small service touch that stuck with us at Gyudo
At Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch, what stayed with me as much as the food was how attentive the store manager was.
Just as we were finishing our meal, the flame under the grill went out, and we were saying to each other, "let's just slowly finish grilling off the residual heat." But the manager came right over and relit it for us.
You could tell she was keeping an eye on the tables even from a distance, and it's these small details that make a place feel a cut above. Thanks to that, I was able to eat comfortably right up until the end.
Final thoughts on dinner at Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch
If you like gyukatsu, Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a place worth visiting. Unlike a typical gyukatsu restaurant, I liked that you could enjoy it in so many different ways.

With detailed broth explanations and kettle rice refills... the self-bar at this gyukatsu place is pretty thoughtful.

The atmosphere is on the upscale side too, so it would suit both a casual meal and occasions where you want a bit more atmosphere, like a family gathering or a blind date! Above all, thanks to the manager who looked after us so carefully until the very end, I wrapped up the meal in a good mood. A tasty gyukatsu place you can trust! Thank you for the good food and good service. 👍
