Mapo charcoal-grill lunch with a 150g hanwoo add-on: Moyeon Mapo
In short
Moyeon Mapo is a hanwoo (Korean beef) charcoal-grill restaurant with private rooms on Tojeong-ro in Mapo, Seoul. On a Friday afternoon the writer and her husband ordered two lunch-special hanwoo charcoal-grilled pot rice sets at 25,000 won each and added 150g more meat, then ate the beef a staff member grilled over charcoal with roasted gim (dried seaweed) and perilla leaf pesto. The wait ran 40 minutes behind 9 parties, but the private room and the soy-braised abalone pot rice set made Moyeon Mapo feel worth the lunch price.

Moyeon Mapo, a Mapo beef restaurant famous for its hanwoo (Korean beef), was where my husband and I went for a long-overdue lunch date.

- A Mapo beef restaurant using castrated cattle under 28 months, wet-aged 500 hours, with a marbling score of 8–9 or higher
- A place where staff grill the beef for you in a private room
- ₩25,000 per person for an upscale, tidy, generous spread
In our own private room, the staff grilled the meat over charcoal from start to finish so it was easy to eat, and we shared the lunch special hanwoo charcoal-grilled pot rice set — doenjang stew, basic pot rice, abalone and a generous spread of side dishes, all for ₩25,000 per person, for two.
Where is Moyeon Mapo? A 4-minute walk from Mapo Station Exit 1

It's a 4-minute walk from Exit 1 of Mapo Station on Line 5, so it's easy to reach by public transportation too.
Parking at Moyeon Mapo: private lot and 3,000-won valet

The restaurant has its own private lot behind the building, so parking is easy, and valet service is available for ₩3,000. There's also the Mapo Retention Pond public parking lot just across the street, so you don't need to worry about finding a spot.
How long is the wait? 9 parties, 40 minutes at Friday noon

Moyeon Mapo is a beef restaurant people line up for. When we visited on a weekday Friday at noon, there were 9 parties waiting, which took about 40 minutes, but there was a comfortable waiting area set up, and you can also reserve ahead through CatchTable.

Every seat is in a separate private room, so we could chat comfortably and enjoy a relaxed meal.
Menu and prices: the 25,000-won hanwoo lunch special

- 🥩 Lunch special hanwoo charcoal-grilled pot rice set — ₩25,000
- ⭕ 150g hanwoo charcoal-grilled meat add-on — ₩25,000
- ⭕ The lunch special menu is also available on Saturdays when the restaurant is open
Moyeon's lunch special hanwoo charcoal-grilled pot rice set requires a minimum order of 2 people, at 120g per person, and includes pot rice and doenjang stew — a very filling meal.
For dinner reservations, groups of 4 or more, or visits for a parent's birthday, there's also a seaweed soup birthday table service, which makes it great for reserved visits, and it's a welcome-kids zone with a hanwoo gomtang (beef bone soup) menu for children.
Side dishes: soy-braised abalone and perilla leaf pesto

The basic tableware, along with warm water for the pot-rice scorched rice and cool tea, were all neatly set out on the table.

An assortment of wrap vegetables, salted squid, perilla leaf pesto, barley ssamjang (dipping paste), napa cabbage kimchi, pickled garlic scapes, roasted gim (dried seaweed) with soy sauce, plus an individual serving of soy-braised abalone, three more side dishes, and water kimchi were all served.
What we ordered: two lunch sets plus a 150g hanwoo add-on

- 🥩 Lunch special hanwoo charcoal-grilled pot rice set — ₩25,000
- 🥩 150g hanwoo charcoal-grilled meat add-on — ₩25,000

The pot rice and doenjang stew came out first. If you scoop the rice from the pot into an empty bowl and add some soy-braised abalone, it's incredibly savory — and the staff kindly explained the best way to enjoy it while setting everything up.
For ₩25,000 per person, a pot rice loaded with vegetables, plus abalone, stew, and a generous spread of side dishes — the whole setup was absolutely top-tier.
On the left is 120g per person of hanwoo charcoal-grilled meat for two people, and on the right is the extra 150g we added to eat more heartily. This place only uses carefully selected hanwoo, and even just looking at the raw meat, the texture and color were on another level.
From start to finish, the staff grilled it right at our table so it was easy to eat, so we could just relax and watch. Since they use real charcoal, the meat gets infused with a full charcoal aroma — a place where you can properly enjoy well-grilled, delicious beef.

Once it was fully grilled, they removed the charcoal right away so we could enjoy it comfortably, and as you can see in the photo, it was transferred over neatly. The aroma of the charcoal combined with the beef's own scent was absolutely amazing.

The staff's pairing: roasted gim + rice + hanwoo + perilla pesto
The staff recommended a delicious combination — roasted gim (dried seaweed) with rice, hanwoo charcoal-grilled meat, and perilla leaf pesto.
The salty, nutty crunch of the crisply roasted gim, followed by the smoky charcoal aroma of the hanwoo and its deep meaty flavor, plus the fresh, fragrant kick of perilla leaf — it hit every note of aroma and flavor and was packed with richness.

The various wrap vegetables with barley ssamjang also paired beautifully, and the kimchi was excellent too — this is a beef restaurant where the kimchi pairing is absolutely top-tier as well. All the seasoning, including the side dishes, was well-balanced, so every combination we tried was a fantastic match.
