Castella cake with 4 whipped cream flavors to go, Gimpo: Jinsim

I was out on a work errand in Gimpo and stopped by a castella cake shop to grab some to go! I happened to be passing by, and since it's more of a quick takeout spot than somewhere to linger, it seemed like a good place to swing by whenever you're out for work or have errands nearby!

The store had a clean, tidy feel overall. Best of all, the packaging box was prettier than I expected 😍 Castella cake itself is a low-pressure gift item, and with such neat packaging, it seemed like a good option for a quick gift for people nearby too~!!

Menu and ordering

This time I picked up one basic-flavor Jinsim Castella and added 4 whipped creams. The creams I chose were

• Basic whipped cream
• Chocolate whipped cream
• Injeolmi (sweet rice cake) whipped cream
• Earl Grey whipped cream

Whipped cream is ₩1,500 each — how much do you actually get?

They pipe the cream fresh into the cup, and this is where I was genuinely surprised haha. The amount of cream is seriously huge!! 🤩 At ₩1,500 each, I honestly expected just enough to lightly top the castella, but when I actually got it, the portion was substantial. It made me think 'wait, this is ₩1,500?' — they gave so much that I could slather it thickly on the castella! If you love whipped cream, I think you'd be really satisfied 😆

Does the whipped cream melt after a 4-hour trip?

Since I went from Gimpo back to my office before finally heading home, I couldn't put the cream in the fridge right away — it was probably about 4 hours of travel in total, and the cream had barely melted 👍🏻 Of course this could vary depending on weather or travel conditions, but based on my actual experience carrying it around, it held up pretty well~!

Once I got home, I finally dug in~~

The castella had a moist, spongy, soft texture — it wasn't dry at all even eaten plain~!

Comparing the 4 whipped cream flavors

Spreading each type of cream on changed the flavor every time 😉 The basic cream paired most naturally with everything, the chocolate cream was, well, chocolate — hard to go wrong there! The injeolmi cream added a nutty, toasty note that felt refreshingly different with the plain castella, and the Earl Grey cream had a subtle tea aroma that worked really well~!

That said, eating a lot of the cream continuously can get a bit rich after a while~!! So I really, really recommend pairing it with coffee!!

Eating castella + whipped cream + coffee together cuts the richness and tastes even better 😉 Especially since the castella is so soft and the cream portion is so generous, having a cup of coffee ready means it disappears in no time haha.

Leftover cream on toasted bread, Cannmore style

Since so much cream was left over, I wondered how to use it up and ended up toasting some sliced bread and making something like a Cannmore-style snack haha. Toasting the bread until golden and piling on the leftover cream suddenly brought back memories of Cannmore, the old dessert café chain. I used to go there with friends all the time back in the day haha. When I mentioned Cannmore to my husband, he said he'd never actually been as a kid — maybe because he's a guy...? Hahaha. I have such vivid memories of going there with friends that piling cream onto toast brought back all that nostalgia and it felt oddly comforting~~!!

If I go again

I picked the most basic castella flavor this time, but looking into it, they also have mugwort castella, chocolate castella, and other varieties. The basic flavor was moist and soft enough to satisfy me, but now I'm curious what the other flavors are like. If I'm in Gimpo again, I think I'll try a different castella flavor~!!

Personally, I found it more fun to add various whipped creams and mix-and-match to my taste rather than just eating plain castella. Each cream is only ₩1,500, so you can try several flavors without much pressure, and the portions were generous enough to satisfy.
