Roe-packed soy crab set for two in Cheonan Yuryang-dong: Kkotgeok

In short

Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong Branch is a Korean restaurant in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, Chungnam, serving soy-marinated and spicy marinated gejang (crab) made with crab from Yeonpyeong Island. A late weekday lunch of the roe-filled crab set for two (70,000 won) brought roe-packed soy crab, spicy marinated crab topped with minari (water dropwort), and buttered rice mixed in the crab shell. The meat was firm and the soy sauce was not salty, so two bowls of rice vanished, and with its hanok-style dining room and large private parking lot, Kkotgeok also works for a parents' birthday or anniversary meal.

I heard Cheonan had a great soy-marinated and spicy-marinated crab restaurant using crab from Yeonpyeong Island, so as a certified gejang (marinated crab) killer, I had to check out Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong Branch!

Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong Branch: hours and parking

Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong Branch is open daily from 11:00 to 21:00, with last order at 20:00. There's a private parking lot right in front of the restaurant.

The gorgeous hanok-style tiled roof really catches your eye! The vibe is so much nicer than your average restaurant, and the dining hall is genuinely spacious. Plus, it's dog-friendly!

The parking lot is huge too, so you don't need to worry about parking even if you drive!

They're also running a customer appreciation event, with prizes given out by drawing 🥰

Inside the hanok-style hall, busy even at a late weekday lunch

The inside of Kkotgeok has plenty of spacious group tables, perfect for gatherings. I went past the usual weekday lunch rush, but it was still packed with customers — I guess a lot of people come for gejang at lunchtime!

I had to snap a photo of this chandelier, it was so pretty! The interior is just gorgeous.

What's in the 70,000 won roe-filled crab set for two

I ordered the roe-filled crab set for two at ₩70,000, plus a drink for ₩2,000. Besides this set, they also sell combo sets that add dried corvina, boiled pork, or crab stew as an extra dish! I went for a late lunch and didn't order one, but if you want a really full spread, the combo sets look great too 👍

Side dishes and seaweed soup at Kkotgeok

The side dishes had that neat, tidy Korean-food feel — japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), deodeok (bellflower root), zucchini, seaweed soup — clean overall and just the right amount of seasoning.

The seaweed soup especially was hot and savory, like something your mom would make!

How much roe is in the Yeonpyeong Island soy crab?

The main roe-filled crab set for two came out quickly! Soy-marinated crab absolutely full of roe, and spicy marinated crab that looked sweet and fiery! From the side dishes to the main dish, it was a generous spread — just the right amount for two people 👍

Can you see how packed with roe this crab is? That glowing look... this is exactly what mouth-watering visuals should look like.

The meat is so packed in there, it just spills out ✨ The soy sauce wasn't salty at all and had incredible umami! And the meat was seriously firm !! Not mushy at all, really firm and dense 🤤

There's no fishy taste at all, it's so fresh you can just slurp it right down, and the seasoning is just right so you get pure bliss in your mouth 🤎 Put the crab meat and roe over rice and take a bite — the umami-rich soy sauce plus firm crab meat is truly a rice-thief in the making..😊

How to eat the crab-shell butter rice

Mix the roe left in the crab shell together with the rice and the butter they give you — the butter adds a nutty richness that makes the flavor even deeper, I highly recommend eating it this way!

Spicy marinated crab is best wrapped in seaweed

Kkotgeok's spicy marinated crab is topped generously with minari (water dropwort), and it looks so tasty with all that sweet-and-spicy sauce mixed in!

See how packed with meat the marinated crab is too? Being real Yeonpyeong crab clearly makes a difference — the meat is full and that firm, dense texture really comes through ❤️

Pile plenty of marinated crab meat on white rice and take a bite — the sweet-spicy sauce, the sweet crab meat, and the warm rice all come together perfectly, and it just keeps going in..❤️

Wrapping it in seaweed (gim) works great too — the nutty aroma of the seaweed and the salty-sweet sauce are a perfect match, so definitely try it wrapped in seaweed too!! I just demolished two bowls of rice at lunch 😆

They also offer takeout, in case that's useful to know!

Is Kkotgeok Cheonan worth a visit?

With the gorgeous hanok atmosphere and the huge parking lot, accessibility is great, and from the look of the female crab's roe to the yield of meat, it was seriously good, with no fishy taste and just the right saltiness. Honestly, this was the best gejang I've ever had!

Adding the butter makes it richer, and wrapping it in seaweed makes it nutty — I think even people who don't usually like gejang could really enjoy this! There was even plum tea and mouthwash for a clean finish. It'd be a great spot for a parents' birthday or an anniversary meal, so for the best soy crab rice restaurant in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, I highly recommend Kkotgeok 💖
