Breakfast gukbap from 7:30am in Geoje-myeon: Bongga Gukbap

In short

Bongga Gukbap is a gukbap (pork soup with rice) restaurant on Giseong-ro in Geoje-myeon, Geoje, Gyeongnam, and it opens at 7:30am, so it works as a breakfast stop. The order was pork gukbap, mixed gukbap and the sample suyuk plate: the mixed gukbap came packed with offal, chal sundae (glutinous rice blood sausage) and pork, along with a full bowl of rice. The kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and cabbage kimchi at Bongga Gukbap were good enough to refill several times.

I was craving gukbap again after a while, so today I visited Bongga Gukbap in Geoje. There's parking space right in front of the restaurant, so if you're driving, you can park easily and go straight in for a meal. haha

Inside Bongga Gukbap and its 7:30am opening time

Bongga Gukbap in Geoje opens at 7:30am, so it's a great gukbap spot to visit for breakfast. Inside, the tables are basically 4-person tables, but they can be pushed together into 8-person tables for larger groups.

The interior isn't cramped at all, so it looked fine for groups to eat together too. That said, if you're coming as a group, it seems better to call ahead. Plenty of people come to eat alone too, so it's a good spot for solo dining as well. haha

You can also order a small "sample" suyuk, and for water and extra side dishes, there's a self-serve corner where you just serve yourself as much as you'd like.

The side dishes: kkakdugi and kimchi steal the show

We ordered pork gukbap, mixed gukbap and the sample suyuk, and the basic side dishes that came with the meal were kkakdugi, salted shrimp, doenjang, chives, pickled onion, kimchi, raw onion, chili peppers, garlic and lettuce.

Personally, the kkakdugi and kimchi went really well with the gukbap — the kkakdugi was so good I went back for more several times. haha ❤️❤️ Turns out this place is a kimchi spot too ☺️☺️❤️

A plate of thick-cut sample suyuk

What is the sample suyuk plate like?

Bongga Gukbap's sample suyuk comes sliced thick, so if you find the pieces too big, you can just cut them with scissors.

Suyuk wrapped in a lettuce leaf

It tasted great eaten with the pickled onion, and just as good wrapped up in a piece of lettuce. Especially since the meat had no gamey smell at all, it was tender and easy to eat. haha

Mixed gukbap topped with chives and perilla seeds
Mixed gukbap served with dadaegi on top

Mixed gukbap and pork gukbap: you can ask for no dadaegi (chili paste)

First, the mixed gukbap comes with chives and perilla seeds mixed in as standard. Dadaegi (spicy chili paste) is also added by default, but if you don't want it, you can just ask them to leave it out and they will.

A full bowl of rice served alongside pork gukbap

The pork gukbap also comes with dadaegi, chives and perilla seeds included by default, just like the mixed gukbap. The rice came in a bowl packed completely full, which I personally found very satisfying.

Mixed gukbap packed with chal sundae

The mixed gukbap was packed with intestines, chapssaltteok sundae and meat — it was really great.

A bowl of mixed gukbap with rice mixed in

I love mixing rice into my gukbap, so I dumped the rice in and slurped it up bite after bite, and before I knew it, the whole bowl was gone. I personally prefer chapssaltteok sundae over pisundae (blood sausage) in my gukbap, so having chapssaltteok sundae in this one made me really happy. haha

How the pork gukbap broth tastes

The pork gukbap also had plenty of meat, which was satisfying. With dadaegi, the broth turns spicy and rich; without it, it's clean and savory with the nuttiness of perilla seeds coming through. I personally didn't add dadaegi and enjoyed it that way — though I could see the appeal of the version with dadaegi too.

Lastly, if you love gukbap or you're looking for a great gukbap restaurant, why not stop by Bongga Gukbap in Geoje for a meal? ...?
