In short

Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch is a stone-grill pork BBQ restaurant near Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi, open until 2am. Two diners visited at 8pm on a weekday and ordered the small mixed stone-grill platter (360g) with extra cheese fondue, plus doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), steamed egg, mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) and spicy fire volcano fried noodles, and the staff grilled everything at the table. Today I'm bringing you a review of Ssosam 208, a well-known pork BBQ spot near Suwon Station!

Interior of Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch on a weekday evening

How busy is Ssosam 208 Suwon Station at 8pm on a weekday?

I visited around 8pm on a weekday! There were a few groups having work dinners, so it wasn't wide open, but seats were still available. Turnover seemed pretty fast!

A pork BBQ restaurant open until 2am! Apparently it's even been on TV.

I stayed until 10pm, and customers were still coming in at that hour! Coming out for pork BBQ that late at night — I found it kind of amazing.

Side dishes at Ssosam 208: kimchi rice noodles, and lettuce you add at order time

Here's how the basic side dishes came out at Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch. There was oil-salt dipping sauce, some kind of wasabi-mixed sauce, ssamjang (soybean paste dip), and what looked like the spice used for dipping lamb.

The red noodles in the last row were called kimchi rice noodle soup. Spicy and unusual! It felt like a spicy counterpoint that cuts the richness of the pork. For lettuce, they said you just tick the '0 won lettuce' box when ordering and they'll bring it out. There was no separate self-serve bar.

Raw mixed stone-grill platter, 360g
Mixed pork on the stone grill

Is the 360g small mixed stone-grill platter enough for two?

I ordered the mixed stone-grill platter (small, 360g)! Since it's under 400g I wondered if it'd be enough, but with all the sides we added, it ended up being just right!

(For reference, we ordered the mixed stone-grill platter, extra cheese fondue, mul-naengmyeon, rice, doenjang jjigae, steamed egg, and spicy fire volcano fried noodles. That's what two women ate, and we were so full we had to leave some leftover,, 🥲)

Staff grill every single piece of meat for you! Since they grill it all and the meat is thin so it cooks fast, I thought it'd be great for a work dinner too. Sure enough, I saw a lot of tables that looked like office groups!

They also grill the kimchi, tofu, and pineapple.

Thin pork belly grilled golden on the stone plate

It'd been a while since I'd had such thin-cut pork, and watching it turn golden on the stone grill was seriously mouthwatering! My first bite was dipped in salt, and it was exactly what you want from stone-grill pork belly!! Since the meat is thin it cooks fast too, which made it easy to eat.

Lava-shaped extra cheese fondue

Extra cheese fondue: the spicy lava cheese explained

I added an order of cheese fondue! It was shaped like a lava flow, pretty unusual. It wasn't rich or heavy — more like spicy, actually?

The cheese has a spicy kick, different from buldak mayo but with a similar vibe somehow? First time trying it, and it was fascinating — felt like eating something exotic.

Grilled kimchi paired with pork belly

A bite with the golden grilled kimchi, a fresh bite with the scallion salad, another bite dipped in oil-salt sauce with kimchi. Every side dish paired well together. Personally, dipping in oil-salt sauce and wrapping it with kimchi was my favorite.

Doenjang jjigae with pork inside
A large serving of steamed egg
Mul-naengmyeon with chewy noodles

Doenjang jjigae, steamed egg and mul-naengmyeon on the side

For side dishes we ordered doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), steamed egg, and mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle soup). The doenjang jjigae even had meat in it and was really delicious! The steamed egg arrived and I was surprised by how huge it was! It had sesame oil in it, giving it a nutty aroma and flavor. And the mul-naengmyeon noodles were chewy and tasty!

What do Ssosam 208's spicy fire volcano fried noodles taste like?

They had spicy fire volcano fried noodles on the menu, so I ordered it wondering — buldak (fire chicken) flavor, maybe? It really was buldak fried noodles, but drenched in what looked like the same sauce that goes into the cheese fondue! Super spicy, but not spicy in a one-note way — it had a cheesy flavor too! Really spicy, but wrapping it up with the pork made it delicious!
