Changwon doesn't have as much coastline scattered around as Busan, but it's not entirely without the sea either — there's usually one standout spot that gives locals a bit of light and rest. In Changwon there's Guisan-dong, which looks out at Machang Bridge. Guisan-dong is especially famous as a drive course for couples because of its pretty night view, and it's also a favorite spot for anglers. There's a whole café street there too, so pretty much any café has a sea view, and some even show off Machang Bridge, which makes them popular.

On the Masan side, there's Gapo and Gusan-myeon. Gusan-myeon has the Jeodo causeway, aka the 'Bridge on the River Kwai,' which has long been a spot older generations visit — native Masan folks over a certain age have basically all been there at least once. There's also Robot Land, which is great for families with kids. But Gusan-myeon takes a fair bit of driving to reach, so compared to that, Gapo — much closer and more accessible from downtown — gets more visitors. It's close to Sinmasan, where Kyungnam University is, so it's a quick trip, and Gapo also has good sea views, which is why so many restaurants and cafés have opened up there. I heard a massive new café recently opened and people are lining up for it. In Gapo, I visited a restaurant with a distant sea view, a bonfire option, and great atmosphere for a date — let me introduce it.

What kind of restaurant is Shashlik Masan Branch?

Shashlik Masan Branch is a charcoal-grilled steak restaurant that uses an authentic direct-flame method to bring out the full flavor of the meat. They use only carefully selected cuts and fresh ingredients, cooked with their own special house sauce for a flavor that suits everyone. The standout is the charcoal aroma soaked into the meat — one bite and your mouth fills with that smoky char and rich meat flavor, it's the best. The restaurant is in Deokdong-dong, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon, near Deokdong Clean Water Flower Garden, Deokdong Park, Deokdong Public Tennis Court, the Changwon Sewage Management Office, and EAC Changwon Care Hospital, in case that's useful.

Shashlik Masan Branch sits right on the main Gapo road, an area packed with long-loved local restaurants, so it's easy to find — you can pull right in from the road. The entrance road is a bit narrow, but the parking lot itself has plenty of space, so parking is easy. I arrived on an early Saturday evening and the lot was already busy with cars.

Terrace fire pit, hammocks and photo zone

The outdoor terrace has a bonfire set up. There are chairs and even hammocks out there, so you can gaze out at the distant sea while enjoying the fire — a really relaxing, healing kind of time. There's also a cute photo zone, so take plenty of pictures. There's another photo zone right at the entrance as soon as you walk in.

Indoor seating and how to order at Shashlik Masan Branch

The interior is decorated with a resort-like, pretty and cozy feel. The window seats aren't floor-to-ceiling glass, but they're wide enough that it doesn't feel cramped — you get an open view of Gapo's natural scenery. There's also floor seating that's great for bringing kids, and each table has a slightly different concept, which makes it fun. The tables are spaced generously apart, and some sections are divided by partitions, so it's easy to enjoy a good time.

There's a counter, but you can just order comfortably from your seat by calling over a staff member.

How the pork shashlik and truffle fries tasted

Everything came out. The pork belly and shoulder, cooked to perfection over charcoal, looked delicious just from the visuals alone. There were plenty of vegetables too — mushroom, bell pepper, garlic, onion, broccoli. You keep it warm at the table over a gentle flame while you eat, and with four different sauces, you get a real range of flavors. The fries we ordered as a side were super crispy too, almost like McDonald's fries — really good.

With the distant Gapo sea view, the bonfire, and the lovely interior, it was a wonderful evening. I recommend Shashlik Masan Branch for somewhere to go in Masan, a Masan restaurant, Western food in Masan, and a dog-friendly spot :)
