Located near the entrance to Yeonnam-dong, let me introduce this true Hongdae local favorite that has been here for ages.

Kind service and generous tastings

You’ll fall for the kindness, then fall all over again for the generous tastings.

Mandong Jegwa is not a particularly large shop, but it is the kind of place that brightens your mood from the moment you walk in. Whenever I visit, the staff greet me so cheerfully and kindly right at the entrance.

Mandong Jegwa’s truly unmatched strength is its generous tastings. All the breads look so good that choosing can be difficult, but the staff here personally pick up and hand you generously cut pieces. Ask about any bread and they cut you a piece without hesitation, so it is incredibly easy to taste it and choose what suits you. Every bread I tried was delicious, so I fell under the happy spell of buying more bread than I had planned.

Big breads with a satisfyingly hefty filling

The very definition of great value! They feel as though they’ve been loaded with ingredients.

Another appeal here is the value for money!

Most of these breads are far bigger than your palm and priced around ₩5,000. Independent bakery bread is so expensive these days, so finding breads of this size and quality at this price in the middle of Yeonnam-dong feels like a small blessing.

Four breads packed to take home

I bought four breads this time, and I was genuinely surprised by how heavy the paper bag felt—as if the bottom might give way. I kept thinking, “This is heavy,” all the way home. Once I cut into the breads at home, I immediately understood why: they were packed full inside, with no skimping on ingredients at all.

Hygienic, thoughtful takeaway packing

The display and packing system in the shop are also excellent.

Every bread was either neatly wrapped in plastic or kept impeccably clean, which gave me complete confidence in the hygiene.

When I paid, they proactively said, “Please let us know in advance and we’ll pack breads that can get squashed or lose their shape separately!”

My review of the four breads I took home

The four breads I carefully picked out this time were Maple, Mugwort Rice Cake, Emmental, and Walnut.

Maple

The moment I opened the bag, a sweet maple aroma wafted up to my nose.

Sweetly aromatic Maple bread

The outside is softly coated in maple syrup, making it sweet and nutty, while the inside is generously filled with moist, soft cream cheese.

One bite brings the rich sweetness of maple and the softly savory flavor of cream cheese together in the perfect sweet-and-salty balance. With an Americano, I could eat this forever.

Mugwort Rice Cake

Mugwort Rice Cake bread

This is a bread no one with an old-fashioned palate should miss. The outside has the rich nuttiness of soybean powder and almonds, while the inside contains genuinely chewy mugwort rice cake, making every bite fun to chew.

The delicate, fragrant aroma of mugwort, the springy rice cake, and the soft bread come together, and the nuttiness bursts out the more you chew. It is a substantial bread that I think parents would enjoy as a gift, too.

Emmental

Emmental cheese bread

Cheese fanatics must put this one in their basket. The dough itself is chewy, and it is filled to the brim with savory, deeply flavorful Emmental cheese and cream cheese.

This was the bread that most clearly showed how generously they use ingredients. Warm it briefly in an air fryer and the cheese melts slightly, maximizing its nutty richness. Its flavor is good enough to serve alongside wine, too.

Walnut

Walnut bread with a crisp exterior

This bread has the delightful contrast of a crisp outside and a fluffy interior. It is topped generously with nutty walnuts and a sweet soboro-style crumb topping, so each bite bursts with crunch and nuttiness.

The bread inside is moist with none of that dry texture, and chewy walnuts keep appearing in every bite, so you never tire of it. It is plain yet pleasantly sweet, perfect as a breakfast substitute or snack.

Kind service, clean packing, wonderfully generous tastings, generous portions, and excellent flavor—every element was perfect at Mandong Jegwa, this Yeonnam-dong bakery! If you want to go on a proper bakery crawl, I strongly recommend this Hongdae favorite.
