Yongin butcher BBQ: 400g marbled rib eye ₩70,000, Dongbaek Hanokjip

In short

Dongbaek Hanokjip is a charcoal-grill butcher restaurant on Eodong-ro in Giheung-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. About 400g of kkotdeungsim (marbled rib eye), picked straight from the fridge case, cost around ₩70,000, and there is no separate table-setting fee. The strong charcoal fire sears the outside fast and keeps the beef juicy, and the doenjang stew simmered on the grill makes a fine finish with rice.

What kind of BBQ restaurant is Dongbaek Hanokjip?

Dongbaek Hanokjip is a charcoal-grill butcher restaurant at 221 Eodong-ro, Giheung-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. I was looking for somewhere good to eat meat in Yongin, and this time I visited Dongbaek Hanokjip, known as one of the go-to BBQ spots in the Dongbaek neighborhood.

The parking lot was huge right off the bat, which I loved — no stress about driving there, and the clean exterior made a great first impression too.

Inside Dongbaek Hanokjip: clean, spacious dining room

Both outside and inside, Dongbaek Hanokjip felt tidy and put-together overall. Rather than the loud, chaotic vibe you might expect from a BBQ joint,

it's the kind of place that's fine to bring family to. There's a separate lunch special too, so it's not just a dinner BBQ spot — it works well for lunch as well.

How the butcher counter works: pick your own cut

Dongbaek Hanokjip is a bit different from a typical BBQ restaurant — it's a butcher-restaurant format. You pick the cut you want, pay at the counter, and grill it yourself at the table. Best of all, there's no separate table-setting fee.

I went with kkotdeungsim this time — about 400g, priced in the ₩70,000-range. Just looking at it, the meat quality seemed really good, so I was excited!

Basic table setting with salad and geotjeori side dishes

There was a nice variety of banchan — salad, geotjeori (fresh kimchi salad), and more. In particular they give you a shiitake-wasabi sauce that pairs really well with the beef.

Can you see the gorgeous color of the kkotdeungsim? This is exactly why people come to a butcher restaurant!

Meal items can be ordered via kiosk. There's a wide range of lunch specials and pork ribs too, so keep that in mind.

How to grill the 400g marbled rib eye just right

Dongbaek Hanokjip's charcoal fire was fiercer than I expected, so the meat started cooking beautifully as soon as it hit the grate. Searing the surface fast over high heat meant

the juices didn't escape much, so I got to eat it juicy and moist.

The kkotdeungsim itself was so tender and savory that it was delicious even dipped in just plain salt, no need for extra sides.

The banchan were tasty overall too, especially the variety of pickled sides, which went great with the meat.

The color is insane, right...? This is the color of a doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) that's just too good.

Doenjang stew on the charcoal grill: order it too

Along with the meat, I ordered doenjang stew and rice too — this got set on the charcoal grill and simmered away. Bubbling it up and eating it with rice — doenjang stew really is a must when you're having BBQ!

I didn't realize there was a dedicated doenjang-rice-in-broth menu item, so I just ordered doenjang stew with rice separately. The staff put it on the grill with tongs for me, so I could mix it all together and eat it like a rice-in-stew dish! Doenjang stew is essential!! Finishing off the meat with a hearty bowl of rice made it feel like a proper, complete meal.

Is Dongbaek Hanokjip in Yongin worth it?

Overall, Dongbaek Hanokjip satisfied on all fronts — meat quality, a clean atmosphere, and a spacious parking lot. Since it's a butcher restaurant, you get to pick your own cut, and with no separate table-setting fee, it felt less of a financial burden too.

I had about 400g of kkotdeungsim for around ₩70,000, and considering the meat quality, that felt like a pretty solid deal. If you're looking for a good BBQ restaurant in Dongbaek, it's worth a visit, and I'd recommend it to anyone searching for a good BBQ restaurant in Giheung or Yongin. If you especially enjoy picking out top-quality meat yourself, it's also worth keeping in mind when you're hunting for a good two-plus hanwoo restaurant.

Easy parking and a clean interior make this a good all-around BBQ restaurant in Dongbaek — for a family meal, a casual lunch, or a day when you really want to eat well.
