Have you seen the dessert making waves on social media lately called wakppu salt bread? BYWAY BAKERS near Yeongdeungpogu Office Station gained fame for its affordable salt bread financiers, and has since kept rolling out buzzworthy desserts one after another — dupple cookies, Dubai salt bread, butter rice cake, and now wakppu salt bread and Hong Kong pineapple buns. It's become a proper bread-pilgrimage bakery café in Seoul.

The wakppu salt bread that's especially gone viral recently is a dessert inspired by the trendy wakppu ball squishy toy — you get to enjoy that satisfying crack-and-split feeling with your hands, along with a sweet flavor. BYWAY BAKERS, with its unique desserts and budget-friendly bakery goods, sits about two minutes from Exit 1 of Yeongdeungpogu Office Station, past Dangsan Park.

What time does the wakppu salt bread come out? 11:30

At BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch, the wakppu salt bread comes out at 11:30, the last item among all the bakery goods. Bread comes out sequentially by time slot starting with the salt bread, so if you're specifically after the wakppu salt bread, keep that in mind. Recently they also released a new menu item — a pineapple bun holding butter inside, capturing the taste of Hong Kong itself. The store is fairly large and sits on the corner of an intersection, so you can spot it from a distance.

Seating at BYWAY BAKERS: window seats, group tables and a bookable meeting room

The inside of BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is much bigger than it looks from outside. There's a quiet window area for reading, tables for group conversations, a section suited for small seminars or chats, and even a separate, enclosed meeting room. Many people just buy bread to take out, but plenty of others were spending time in the space too. The meeting room is reservation-only and even has a projector screen, so it seemed great for holding an outside meeting while enjoying bread and drinks.

BYWAY BAKERS is a bakery café where you can enjoy bread with drinks — they sell everything from coffee to tea, lattes, ades, juices, and energy drinks, and the prices weren't too steep either, fairly reasonable overall.

Toward the back there's the bakery's work area, and in front of it a long stretch of baked goods lined up, giving off a delicious smell.

What bread BYWAY BAKERS sells, plus gift boxes

From salt bread to red bean bread, baguettes, bagels, focaccia, pineapple bread, butter rice cake, chocolate baguette, croissants, madeleines, financiers, pretzels, and egg tarts — there were quite a lot of bread varieties on their own. Items like financiers and egg tarts come with a free gift package box when bought as a set, which would make for a great gift dessert.

The three wakppu salt breads and their prices

The reason I visited BYWAY BAKERS this day was precisely for the wakppu salt bread. There were three kinds prepared: the signature peach yogurt wakppu salt bread, fresh blueberry yogurt wakppu salt bread, and fig batiché wakppu salt bread.

The peach yogurt wakppu salt bread grabs your eye with its visuals alone. BYWAY BAKERS' signature salt bread gets a coating of sweet white chocolate for extra sweetness.

A disposable plastic glove is included, and putting it on to crack and tear it open in one go seems to be another charm of enjoying wakppu salt bread. Inside the salt bread is packed with soft, sweetly preserved white peach.

The fresh blueberry yogurt wakppu salt bread, topped with actual fresh blueberries, has its own distinct charm compared to the peach version — a yogurt flavor brightened with tangy blueberries.

Behind the sweetness of the white chocolate comes the savory-salty texture of the salt bread, then the fresh fruit and tangy yogurt flavor — a dessert that nails both taste and fun.

Butter tteok: 2 pieces for 3,000 won, sold individually

I've enjoyed butter rice cake (butter-tteok) for a while now, and it's sold individually too, so I set it out alongside the salt bread. It's 2 pieces for ₩3,000, and I drizzled it with condensed milk for an even sweeter, properly delicious treat.

Why BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is worth a second visit

BYWAY BAKERS near Yeongdeungpogu Office Station, with its budget-friendly bread and forward-thinking, unusual desserts, is the kind of place I'd want to come back to anytime. The wakppu salt bread was fun to eat, and next time I'd like to try the yellow cheese financier and the Hong Kong pineapple bread too.
