Jungsan-dong ₩20,900 dinner shabu-shabu buffet: Pyeonbaek Hoegwan
In short
Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Main Branch is an all-you-can-eat restaurant on Haneulbyeolbit-ro in Jungsan-dong, Yeongjong, Incheon, serving cypress-steamed meat (pyeonbaekjjim), shabu-shabu and rice-paper rolls. Dinner costs ₩20,900, with ₩7,900 for a 4-to-7-year-old; on this visit with a 7-year-old niece, the cypress steam came first, then brisket (chadolbagi) and beef shank (yangji) swished in half spicy, half plain broth — the brisket tasted far better, and the plain broth beat the spicy one. The playroom right beside the hall makes Pyeonbaek Hoegwan easy for families with kids, though the salad bar had no perilla leaves.

A shabu-shabu spot worth trying in Jungsan-dong, Yeongjong: Pyeonbaek Hoegwan

I went to Pyeonbaek Hoegwan for shabu-shabu and cypress steam, a well-known spot in Jungsan-dong :) They have a kids' playroom so it's great to visit with a child, and you get to eat a wide variety with the cypress steam and shabu-shabu. Seems good for family gatherings too.

Inside Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Main Branch: seating and the kids' playroom
Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Main Branch is on the 2nd floor of the building — head up and you'll find the shabu-shabu restaurant.

The tables were spacious overall, making it comfortable to dine. There are window seats too!

The kids' playroom is right next to the dining area, so parents can eat with peace of mind! The playroom isn't big, but it has everything it needs haha. Just the right size for kids to play. I went with my niece and she had a great time.

What's on the salad bar at Pyeonbaek Hoegwan?
Pyeonbaek Hoegwan's salad bar is right in the middle of the hall. Let's take a proper look now.

Corn salad and french fries. Kids will probably love these hahaha.

There's tomato pasta, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), soup, and morning bread — good for appetizers.

And there's an assortment of vegetables ready for rice-paper rolls and shabu-shabu.

There's shabu-shabu sauce and refill broth, and even instant noodle sari (add-in noodles) too.

There are two types of meat too, and both are all-you-can-eat. Just grab these when you're ready for shabu-shabu.

I was hungry so I grabbed a little bit of everything haha. I love perilla leaves with rice-paper rolls but there weren't any, ugh.

The tteokbokki was really thick and spicy. Perfect as an appetizer. But a bit of a letdown — maybe because it was late, the rice cakes weren't very soft.

Cypress-steamed meat first: did a 7-year-old eat it?
At Pyeonbaek Hoegwan, you start by eating the cypress steam. When it's ready, a staff member comes and opens the lid for you! The meat looked tender and delicious. There's a bit of bok choy, napa cabbage, sweet pumpkin, enoki mushrooms, and shrimp mixed in too. Because the meat was so soft, my 7-year-old niece ate it really well.

There's peanut sauce, chili sauce, and soy sauce, so you can dip according to taste, and I grabbed rice paper to wrap it up! Rice-paper rolls are always delicious, ugh. It was such a shame there were no perilla leaves at the salad bar... they'd be so good with these!!!

The cypress steam portion was surprisingly generous. It's tasty even without wrapping it in rice paper, just dipped in wasabi soy sauce. Once you finish this, it's time for shabu-shabu!!! Wrapping it with pineapple is so good 😀

Brisket over beef shank, plain broth over spicy: the shabu-shabu verdict
The cypress steam portion was surprisingly generous. Once you finish it, it's time for shabu-shabu — I grabbed meat and vegetables from the salad bar, just enough. Since I was already pretty full from the cypress steam and rice-paper rolls, I couldn't eat much more, ugh. For meat I got the leaner cuts, yangji (beef shank) and chadolbagi (brisket), and chadolbagi was definitely tastier — just so you know haha.

For shabu-shabu you can choose the broth — I went with spicy broth and plain broth, half and half. I love bean sprouts so I added lots of those along with fried tofu haha. I wanted to finish with kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) and porridge too, but I was too full... so I just stuck to meat, ugh. The plain broth was tastier than the spicy one. Next time I'll have to try the noodles and porridge too!!
If you're looking for a good shabu-shabu restaurant in Jungsan-dong, give Pyeonbaek Hoegwan a try. It was a solid restaurant for going with kids.
