Seongsu gyukatsu restaurant, pickled radish topping combo: Gyuen Dang
In short
Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese beef cutlet) restaurant on the second floor of an alley off Yeonmujang 7-ga-gil in Seongdong, Seoul. A weekend visit at 3pm still meant a wait, and striploin and tenderloin gyukatsu were cooked together on one tabletop grill, then dipped in Isigny butter, wasabi and salt. The seasoned pickled radish topping cut the richness best of all at Gyuen Dang, and a reservation is essential for a Seongsu date or lunch with friends.

Today I was out wandering around Seongsu and got a huge craving for Japanese food, so I stopped by Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch, a Seongsu gyukatsu spot. It's apparently also a popular Seongsu date restaurant — lots of couples and groups of friends there too. Such a satisfying find on a rare outing,, ✨ So today's menu: gyukatsu at Gyuen Dang, a Seongsu lunch spot
Where is Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch, and is there a wait?
Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is on the 2nd floor of 10 Yeonmujang 7-ga-gil, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. It's tucked in a slightly quiet alley, so it was easy and comfortable to get to.

A wait even at 3pm on a weekend in Seongsu

It's such a popular Seongsu gyukatsu spot that even visiting around 3pm on a weekend meant this kind of wait,, If you're planning to come for a Seongsu date course, book ahead no matter what!
Inside Gyuen Dang: bar seats, tables and one grill each
The store isn't huge, but the spacing between tables was generous enough that it never felt cramped. There are bar seats, 2-tops, 4-tops and more, so it works well for both group gatherings and dates!

Gyuen Dang menu: omelet rice as well as gyukatsu
Gyuen Dang is known for gyukatsu, but the menu also has rice bowls, omurice, curry, udon, and more. I found out later that this place is apparently also known for its omurice! I went craving meat, though, so I ordered striploin gyukatsu and tenderloin gyukatsu.

How to eat gyukatsu at Gyuen Dang, step by step

📝 How to eat at Gyuen Dang, a Seongsu Japanese restaurant
- Eat the gyukatsu plain first to taste it as is
- Top it with Isigny butter
- Dip it in the various sauces
Honest review of the striploin and tenderloin gyukatsu
Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch has one grill per table, so like anywhere else, you just grill it as much as you like. I ordered the striploin gyukatsu and the tenderloin gyukatsu.

The color on this meat is just insane,,,? ጿ ኈ ቼ ዽ ጿ ኈ ቼ ዽ ኈ ቼ ዽ ጿ ዽ ጿ ኈ ቼ ዽ ጿ

The gyukatsu comes with sides of miso soup, rice, pickled radish?, and salad, plus wasabi, salt, sauce, and Isigny butter to dip it in.
I saw that some 2-top tables even have two grills, but ours had just one, so we had to pile everything on at once haha;

Lightly seared or well done? Grilling the beef to taste
Gyukatsu tastes a bit different lightly grilled versus grilled crisp all the way through, so just cook it to your own preference.

Lightly grilled, the juices stay moist inside, which is delicious, and crisp-grilled gives you that crispy-outside-juicy-inside thing — honestly I can't pick ㅜ

Just dip it in the salt or wasabi sauce that comes with it, whichever you prefer.

Melting Isigny butter over the beef cutlet
As a proper Seongsu gyukatsu spot, the meat itself was already super tender and tasty, but topping it with this butter takes the flavor up to legendary levels. It's Isigny butter to start with, so even just tossing it on casually turns it into a proper dish.
They also come by regularly to swap out the grill plate, so you can keep eating cleanly.

The tenderloin gyukatsu wasn't chewy at all, so soft that even just a touch of wasabi was enough ദ്ദി(• ˕ •マ.ᐟ

Ah, looking at this photo makes me want to eat it again.

My favourite combination: gyukatsu with seasoned pickled radish
Here's my top combo recommendation! Piling this pickled radish topping on generously cuts through the richness completely and adds a crunchy texture — it's basically the final boss, so please try it at least once _()_
Is Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch worth it?
If you found this blog searching for a Seongsu gyukatsu spot, Seongsu date, Seongsu lunch spot, or Seongsu Japanese food, you're a lucky one. There's a pretty good gyukatsu place in Gwangju too, but this Seongsu gyukatsu spot Gyuen Dang honestly rivals it. The meat was so tender and delicious I just kept inhaling it. I found out later that the omurice here is apparently the real deal too,, planning to try that next time! If you're looking for Seongsu Japanese food as a Seongsu lunch spot, give Gyuen Dang a try 🫶
