Triple-aged albaegi course at Kkotgeok, a Cheonan gejang restaurant

In short

Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong Branch is a hanok-style gejang (marinated crab) restaurant in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, Chungnam. The albaegi course costs 35,000 won per person and brings Yeonpyeong-do female soy crab together with yangnyeom (spicy-sweet) crab, eaten here one bite heavily coated in soy sauce and one bite with almost none to compare crab that has been aged three times. That triple aging leaves a faint, skate-like tang under the freshness, a clearly different character from ordinary soy crab.

I tried the albaegi course at Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong Branch, made with crab aged three times. Here's my review after enjoying the fresh-yet-slightly-sharp flavor of the aged soy crab alongside the sweet and spicy yangnyeom crab.

I visited Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong Branch while looking for Korean food in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan. With its quiet hanok (traditional Korean house) exterior and plenty of parking, it looked like a good spot for a family meal or a gathering. Since you can try both soy crab and spicy crab here, it seemed like a great place to recommend to anyone searching for the best gejang (marinated crab) in Cheonan.

The first thing that catches your eye at Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong is the tiled hanok-style exterior. Step inside and the mood is clean and polished, with tables spaced generously apart for a comfortable meal.

The main hall and annex are separated, and the annex apparently operates as a pet-friendly space. That means regular diners and diners with pets can each use their own section.

What comes with the 35,000-won albaegi course: soy crab and spicy crab together

What I had that day was the albaegi course, ₩35,000 per person. It lets you try both Yeonpyeong-do female soy crab and spicy yangnyeom crab, served together with rice, soup, and basic side dishes.

I liked that I could taste both the soy crab and the spicy crab rather than just one or the other.

Beyond the albaegi course, Kkotgeok also offers A, B, and C sets (for 2 people) at ₩80,000 each. Adding ₩10,000 to my albaegi course got me dried corvina and crab stew as well. Kkotgeok, a Korean restaurant in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, also has dried corvina course, Yeonpyeong crab stew, crab-marinated boiled pork, and more on the menu.

What does triple-aged soy crab taste like at Kkotgeok?

Kkotgeok's soy crab is said to be aged three times. Tasting it, I noticed a fermented depth that's a bit different from ordinary soy crab.

Yeonpyeong-do female soy crab aged three times

It's not a style with a strong fishy edge. Instead, a distinctive aged flavor lingered faintly.

Personally, I got a very slight sharp sensation, kind of like eating skate (hongeo). It wasn't intensely fermented, more like a gentle, subtle aging. What was unusual was that it still felt fresh while carrying that aged flavor at the same time.

So it felt like more than just salty soy crab — it had a character that seemed to come specifically from Kkotgeok's own aging method.

One bite soaked in soy sauce, one bite plain: comparing the flavor

Another interesting thing: the crab itself inside Kkotgeok's soy crab is fairly plain and mild, while the soy marinade is quite salty. So I tried eating it in a couple of different ways.

A bite of soy crab generously coated in sauce

For one bite, I coated it generously in the tasty soy sauce.

For the next bite, I went easy on the sauce and focused on the crab meat's own flavor. Alternating like this let me pick out both the aged crab flavor and the soy marinade flavor separately.

Picking apart the meat from the soy crab

Eating the soy crab salty was good, and tasting the crab's natural flavor on its own was good too.

How spicy is Kkotgeok's yangnyeom crab? A grown-up heat, not sweet

Kkotgeok's yangnyeom (spicy-sweet marinated) crab has a clearly different appeal from the soy crab. The meat was packed full, coated in a spicy-sweet-salty sauce that went well with rice. Where the soy crab is all about aged flavor, the yangnyeom crab felt more familiar and appetite-driving.

The yangnyeom crab also wasn't the typically sweet style you might expect. It wasn't heavily sweet, more deep in flavor — a grown-up take on yangnyeom crab.

The basic side dishes served with the crab — seasoned vegetables, white kimchi, sautéed zucchini, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) — were also neatly arranged and paired well with the crab.

Dining as two? Kkotgeok's A, B and C sets at 80,000 won

Kkotgeok also offers the A set at ₩80,000. If you're visiting with a group, a set menu that lets you try several dishes instead of just crab seems like a good option.

You can enjoy dried corvina, boiled pork, crab stew, and more together. It's a good choice for a family meal or gathering in Yuryang-dong. I only noticed how well-composed Kkotgeok's set menus were after I'd already ordered. If you're visiting as a pair, the albaegi course is nice, but I'd also recommend the set menu that comes with crab stew.

Especially for couples or pairs, ordering a set menu seems like a solid choice. Next time, I think I'd go for the set menu (₩80,000) that includes crab stew.

Why Kkotgeok is worth the trip to Yuryang-dong when you crave crab

Kkotgeok Cheonan Yuryang-dong Branch is a place I'll remember for the distinctive flavor of its three-times-aged soy crab.

A plate of the aged soy crab

The subtle aged flavor, more pronounced than in ordinary soy crab, felt refreshingly different, and the yangnyeom crab was a tasty, grown-up flavor that wasn't too spicy or too sweet. If you're looking for good food in Yuryang-dong, Korean food in Yuryang-dong, or the best crab restaurant in Cheonan, consider Kkotgeok for its hanok atmosphere alongside its crab dishes.
