Hangover sundae-guk with self-serve noodles, Suwan District: Sinjuokmi
In short
Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch is a 24-hour sundae-guk (blood sausage soup) and suyuk (boiled pork) restaurant in Jangdeok-dong, Gwangsan, Gwangju. Stopping in one morning after a heavy night, the writer ordered the suyuk set — the soup plus boiled pork for 3,000 won extra — and added boiled somyeon noodles, napa cabbage kimchi, cheongyang chili and onion from the self-serve bar. Clean broth with no gamy smell and moist pork boiled four times a day make Sinjuokmi both a hangover cure and a full meal.

I overdid it the night before, so I needed a proper hangover cure 😓 After going back and forth on what to eat, I decided on Sinjuokmi for its restorative sundae-guk (blood sausage soup)! Hoping a hot bowl of soup would set me right, I headed to Sinjuokmi, a well-known gukbap spot in Suwan District, Gwangju haha.

Is Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch really open 24 hours for a morning hangover cure?
This is Sinjuokmi in Suwan District, Gwangju. Since it's open 24 hours, it's great for a late-night meal after the last bus, or for a hangover cure in the morning like me.

Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch is a Blue Ribbon Survey pick, no less!!!! 💙💙💙 And with Chuseok coming up soon — since there's often a lot of family meals during the holidays, picking a menu everyone likes can actually be tricky, but gukbap (soup with rice) or suyuk (boiled pork) are dishes that don't really split opinions, so this seemed like a good spot to visit with family too. Especially when eating with parents, sometimes a warm, hearty meal is more comfortable than something too intense, and this place felt like it would fit the bill.

Sinjuokmi highlights three flavors: sundae (blood sausage) made with a recipe passed down through generations, kimchi made fresh daily, and freshly boiled pork.

How much is the suyuk set at Sinjuokmi? 3,000 won more than the gukbap
I ordered the suyuk set. Adding just 3,000 won to the soup price gets you boiled pork too. You can also choose sundae only or meat only, so it's a place where you can order to your taste. Just looking at the menu felt like a hangover cure in itself. I needed that hot soup, fast, ㅠㅠ

Every table comes with pepper and chili paste ready to go.

This is the basic table setting: diced radish kimchi, radish salad, onion, and doenjang (soybean paste).

What is on the self-serve bar? Boiled somyeon noodles to add to the sundae-guk
For anything extra you're missing, there's a self-serve bar. It had diced radish kimchi, radish salad, napa cabbage kimchi, onion, chili, garlic, doenjang, chives, and — surprisingly — boiled somyeon (thin wheat noodles)! I grabbed some to add to my sundae-guk haha.

So I brought over cheongyang chili, napa cabbage kimchi, somyeon noodles, and onion as extras haha.

Sinjuokmi's suyuk, boiled four times a day: starting with the lung
This is the suyuk (boiled pork) that arrived first. The happiness of 3,000 won extra ☺️ I really love lungs, so I dug in there first. These days a lot of Korean snack places only sell sundae without the organ meats, so this kind of offal is precious ㅠㅠ

And Sinjuokmi boils its pork four times a day at set times. Some places boil a big batch in advance and serve from that, but because this place boils multiple times a day, the meat was moist and tender!

How does the spicy sundae-guk taste? Clean broth with no gamy smell
Korea's fast food indeed! The spicy sundae-guk arrived too. It was packed with sundae and meat, so even one bowl was quite filling. Pouring rice into the broth really brings out the charm of gukbap! Personally, I think the broth flavor matters, but whether it has a gamy smell or not is really the key factor, and I was glad I could eat it clean without that issue. A spoonful of soup → a bite of suyuk → then kimchi — that combo was the best haha. Eating suyuk alongside the soup really does make the meal feel that much more filling.

The sundae was so hot I fished it out ahead of time — look how plump it is!!!

This isn't sundae filled with just glass noodles — it's real sundae, truly real! It's tasty even without dipping it in vinegared chili paste, and since I liked the napa cabbage kimchi so much, I topped my sundae with it.
Why Sinjuokmi is the Suwan District stop on a hangover morning
That bubbling broth was no joke ㅠㅠ Living up to its Blue Ribbon Survey listing, I got to enjoy everything from the soup to the suyuk cleanly and thoroughly — Sinjuokmi, a go-to restaurant in Suwan District, Gwangju for whenever a hearty meal comes to mind. It's a place I'll think of again on days I want to cure a hangover with hot broth, days I want a filling meal, or days I'm looking for somewhere comfortable to eat with family. If you're looking for a great gukbap spot in Suwan District, try the restorative sundae-guk plus the pork boiled four times a day at Sinjuokmi for a hearty meal :)
