Yeongdeungpo bakery, white chocolate salt bread at lunch: BYWAY BAKERS

In short

BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is a bakery café about a 2-minute walk from Exit 1 of Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station in Seoul. Over a weekday lunch break, the writer and coworkers picked the fig basque wakppu salt bread and the fresh peach yogurt wakppu salt bread, then cracked the white chocolate shells open together. Between the taste and the fun of cracking each shell, BYWAY BAKERS is an easy pick for sharing with coworkers.

The first thing that caught my eye walking in was, of course, the shelves packed full of bread!

From salt bread to financiers, egg tarts, baguettes — the usual bakery staples — plus a bunch of trendy desserts you'd expect to see on social media, they had it all.

Browsing around, I'd originally planned to just get the wakppu salt bread, but everything looked so good I wanted to grab one of everything. They also had gift-ready packaging, which seemed handy for office snacks or a light dessert gift.

What exactly is wakppu salt bread?

The main reason we came to BYWAY BAKERS this time was the wakppu salt bread! After some deliberation, we picked two — fig basque wakppu salt bread and fresh peach yogurt wakppu salt bread.

Wakppu salt bread packaged in fruit netting

The packaging itself was so cute. It came in a fruit netting bag, so at first glance I wasn't even sure it was bread — but once we took it out, there was a white chocolate coating wrapped around the salt bread.

True to the name, this is a salt bread you crack open with a satisfying crunch. Press gently on the white chocolate shell and it makes this crisp, cracking sound that's actually pretty fun.

I remember cracking them open one by one with my coworkers, laughing over how this cracks even more satisfyingly than wakppu marshmallow candy haha.

Fig basque wakppu salt bread: how it tastes

First up was the fig basque wakppu salt bread. It's packed with fig, basque cheesecake, and yogurt cream inside the salt bread, so the first bite felt pretty rich and layered.

The outside is sweet and crisp thanks to the white chocolate, and once you get inside, there's savory cheesecake, soft cream, and the mild sweetness of fig — the combination worked better than I expected. If you like salt bread that gives you a mix of flavors rather than just plain sweetness, this one's for you.

Fresh peach yogurt wakppu salt bread: how it tastes

Second was the fresh peach yogurt wakppu salt bread! Personally, I liked this one a bit more for its refreshing taste. It's loaded with fresh peach, jam, and yogurt cream inside, and the peach's signature sweet-tart flavor kept it from feeling too heavy despite all that cream.

Eating the crispy salt bread shell, the sweetness of the white chocolate, and the yogurt cream and peach inside all together in one bite made for a pretty layered flavor. If you had to pick just one and love refreshing desserts, I'd say go with the fresh peach yogurt one.
