Blood sausage soup (sundaeguk) for two in Incheon: Yennal Gyeongseong

In short

Yennal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Guwol Moraenae Market Station Branch is a sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup) restaurant that opened three months ago near Exit 2 of Moraenae Market Station in Guwol-dong, Namdong, Incheon. Two set meals were ordered at 15,000 won each — the (Special) Boiled Pork and Chapsundae Set and the (Spicy Soup) Boiled Pork and Chapsundae Set — and both arrived so loaded with sundae, gopchang and head meat that a light eater would be better off with a single bowl. The rich broth, springy chapsundae and clean-tasting boiled pork made Yennal Gyeongseong a filling meal on a cool day.

These days the temperature swings a lot between morning and night. It's hot during the day but pretty chilly at night, so I've started craving warm soup dishes. So let me introduce a sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) restaurant that opened three months ago near Moraenae Market in our neighborhood of Guwol-dong: Yennal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Guwol Moraenae Market Station Branch.

Where is Yennal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk in Guwol-dong, and where do you park?

Yennal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Guwol Moraenae Market Station Branch is located on the main road across from the 'Daiso' side of Moraenae Market. It's in a great spot for a hearty meal after browsing the market. If you're driving, there's a parking lot behind the restaurant, but it's narrow, so I'd recommend parking at Mansubokgae 1 Public Parking Lot and walking over instead (about a 2-minute walk across from the lot).

Since it only opened recently, the interior feels clean and comfortable.

The self-serve corner has napa cabbage kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), ssamjang, salted shrimp, chili peppers and onions, so you can help yourself to as much as you need.

The menu beyond sundaeguk: jeongol hot pots and samgyetang

Looking at the menu, besides sundaeguk there's also sundae-gopchang jeongol (hot pot), bone jeongol, and samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup). I liked that you can customize your sundaeguk — sundae only, no innards, no head meat — to your preference.

Two set meals at 15,000 won each: special and spicy

We ordered the (Special) Boiled Pork/Chapsundae Set (₩15,000) and the (Spicy Soup) Boiled Pork/Chapsundae Set (₩15,000), both including rice. The set menu comes with boiled pork and sundae served on a small side plate.

The (Special) Boiled Pork/Chapsundae Set is loaded with far more sundae, gopchang and head meat than a regular sundaeguk. The portion was so~~ huge that I regretted not ordering a single-item dish instead of the set, haha 😂 (light eaters, definitely go with a single dish).

How the sundaeguk tasted: rich broth and springy chapsundae

Now for the actual meal. I picked up a piece of head meat, dipped it lightly in salted shrimp, and — savory and salty with the springy texture of head meat, so good 👍 Then I put salted shrimp on a piece of chapsundae soaked in the rich broth, blew on it, and took a bite — chewy texture, moist and clean-tasting 😗.

Next I dropped a big spoonful of white rice into the soup, topped it with napa cabbage kimchi and kkakdugi, and dug in — the rich broth and crunchy kkakdugi worked so well together my spoon started moving fast ⚡️⚡️. White rice really is the perfect match for guk-bap (soup with rice). About halfway through, I added cheongyang chili and dadaegi (spicy chili paste) for a kick. Never a dull bite.

How spicy is the spicy sundaeguk at Yennal Gyeongseong?

Taking a spoonful of the spicy sundaeguk broth, the flavor of chili oil rushed in and got the saliva flowing, and the sharp spicy dadaegi tasted perfect for a hangover cure 👍👍. Spice level was a bit milder than Shin Ramyun. If you want it spicier, you can add the cheongyang chili peppers set out on the table. Even though this isn't the 'Special' version, the spicy sundaeguk was still loaded with ingredients.

Boiled pork with salted shrimp

The boiled pork was tender with a nice chew, not overly fatty, and clean-tasting with no gamey smell, so pairing it with salted shrimp or kimchi really brought out the umami. The salted shrimp was fresh with no fishy taste, just savory and salty.

Writing this post, I find myself thinking again about that rich, clean broth and the chewy sundae. I'm the type who gets hooked on one food and eats it for days once I fall for it, so I might be on a sundaeguk restaurant tour for a while, haha 😋. If you want a warm meal as the weather cools down, a bowl of sundaeguk will do the trick!
