Inside Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon Branch: hall, group room and window seats

The interior is huge! There's a separate private room too, so it looked great for Dunsan-dong company dinners or gatherings.

They even have baby dishware ready. Wet wipes, aprons, hair ties, even floss — such thoughtful touches...!

We took a seat by the wide window~

The table was already set up in advance, and you could really feel the attention to detail!
How do you order kaoyu at Bantiannyao?

Since it was my first time trying this dish, I really wondered how to order, but they had it kindly laid out from step 1 to step 5, which was great.
- Step 1: Mala kaoyu, on mild spice
- Step 2: Ningbo fish
- Step 3: Vegetable-mushroom mixed platter
- Self bar
That's how we ordered! The self bar was also unlimited refills for 2,000 won per person, so it was great value.
Self-bar sauces at Bantiannyao: Geonhui sauce and Gamdong garlic sauce

From unlimited drinks all the way to a full sauce bar!!
Let me show you in video first~

Isn't it just as impressive as a hotpot restaurant with all those sauce options? You can totally make the famous Geonhui sauce here... There are even snacks for dessert too:)

I carefully made one bowl of Geonhui sauce and the recommended Gamdong garlic sauce, and headed back to our table!!

They also have rice and rice paper ready. Unlimited rice refills were truly a genius move — since mala kaoyu is basically mala braised fish, isn't it seriously a rice thief...? If you add the self bar, everything from drinks to rice is unlimited!
Mala kaoyu 43,000 won and the vegetable-mushroom platter 8,800 won

Mala kaoyu, ₩43,000. Seriously insane visuals. It's packed with mala aroma, the fish is huge, and it really felt like love at first sight..?

Vegetable-mushroom mixed platter, ₩8,800. Wood ear mushroom, enoki mushroom, oyster mushroom, bok choy, lotus root, napa cabbage, tofu, Vienna sausage, meatballs, quail eggs, panda-shaped mung bean noodles, gungchae — the platter was seriously packed.
After it simmers a bit, the owner comes over and debones the fish for you. He asked if I'd had kaoyu before, and I confidently said no..!!!hahaha When I visited Seoul, I remember turning around after catching the smell, so I'm so grateful one opened in Daejeon too, thank you owner...

I'll enjoy this well!!

Just looking at it, it's so plump and springy... the kind of taste that makes you devour two bowls of rice. Fish might feel unfamiliar, but if you like mala tang or hotpot, you're guaranteed to love this!!

The first bowl of rice appears... I scooped just a little claiming I was on a diet, then scraped it all clean and went back for more hahahaha

After eating a bit, they load in tons of toppings. There are so many kinds of toppings that it genuinely felt like eating hotpot haha. Coming for fish and ending up with hotpot vibes, feels good...
A truly high-level rice paper wrap technique haha. Rice paper wraps are surprisingly a hidden gem here. Dip it deep in the broth, load it up with stuff, wrap it, and pop it in your mouth. A wrap soaked in sauce, chomp chomp.

Free ice cream and the Snuggle at the Bantiannyao checkout counter
At the end, there's even prepared dessert ice cream..! Since it's milk ice cream, it left my mouth, which was full of spice, feeling clean and refreshed — such a nice way to finish.

When I went to pay, I was touched to see floss, stain remover, and even Snuggle fabric softener so thoughtfully prepared, TT. I was a bit worried since some broth had splashed on me. The Snuggle completely took care of the smell, so I got to leave with a delicious meal and a good memory too! Highly recommend Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon Branch for its special menu!!!
