Abalone seaweed soup and mul-hoe set meal on Udo, Jeju: Soseom Jeonbok

Soseom Jeonbok is an abalone specialty restaurant on Udo Island, Jeju, right on Udo Coastal Road. The ₩48,000 wedding table set brought abalone rice, butter-grilled abalone, abalone seaweed soup, and abalone mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup) to one table, all enjoyed with an ocean view through floor-to-ceiling windows. The warm soup and cold mul-hoe never overlapped in flavor, making it a meal that stayed satisfying to the last bite.

Late-night dakdoritang with egg rolls in Jeju: Deureomtong

Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang is a Korean restaurant in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju, where you simmer chicken stew in an iron lid pot right on a drum-can table. Two of us ordered two servings of the pot dakdoritang, egg rolls, and finishing fried rice, and staff even gave us a 10-minute timer for the boil. Open until 3am, it's a solid pick for dinner and drinks in Nohyeong-dong.

Jeju makgeolli bar with a free makpuccino reservation perk: Jumo

Jumo is a Korean bar in Yeon-dong, Jeju City, with a wide makgeolli (rice wine) selection, set in a basement with about seven four-person tables. A Naver reservation earned a free makpuccino, served alongside beef tartare with raw shrimp sashimi, al-jjamppong (spicy noodle soup with pollock roe) and a non-alcoholic strawberry highball; the raw shrimp were big enough to eat in two bites, and the peppery jjamppong broth turned rich and savory from the roe. Jumo won over both the writer and her husband, who plan to come back for the grilled blue crab.

Jeju sashimi takeout for a stay-in dinner with a baby: Dutumhoe

Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch is a sashimi takeout shop inside the night market at Gate 8 of Dongmun Market in Jeju City. On day one of a 3-night, 4-day Jeju trip with a 5-month-old baby, the writer took away assorted sashimi (flatfish, salmon, hairtail, amberjack and threadfin bream) for 35,000 won, mackerel pressed sushi for 15,000 won and eight coconut fried shrimp for 10,000 won to eat at the Jeju City accommodation. Dutumhoe packs everything in a cooler bag at no extra cost, which kept the fish fresh through the heatwave and was the deciding reason for choosing it.

Seongsan, Jeju Western course restaurant for anniversaries: Nansan-ri

Nansan-ri Restaurant is a Western-style course restaurant in Nansan-ri village, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo, Jeju. For a 12th wedding anniversary the writer booked a lunch course for three, which ran from pre-meal bread with bracken butter and an egg dish topped with caviar to Jeju black pork tenderloin steak and chorizo oil spaghetti, plus a separate basil pasta for their child. Leaving an anniversary note at booking brought out a specially prepared dessert dish, which made Nansan-ri Restaurant an easy choice for a celebration meal with a kid in tow.
