Jeju makgeolli bar with a free makpuccino reservation perk: Jumo

In short

Jumo is a Korean bar in Yeon-dong, Jeju City, with a wide makgeolli (rice wine) selection, set in a basement with about seven four-person tables. A Naver reservation earned a free makpuccino, served alongside beef tartare with raw shrimp sashimi, al-jjamppong (spicy noodle soup with pollock roe) and a non-alcoholic strawberry highball; the raw shrimp were big enough to eat in two bites, and the peppery jjamppong broth turned rich and savory from the roe. Jumo won over both the writer and her husband, who plan to come back for the grilled blue crab.

I'd seen this bar in Instagram ads a few times, and the grilled crab looked so good I really wanted to visit! Thanks to a good opportunity, I booked through Naver and went. The makpuccino I got as a reservation perk, plus the spicy roe jjampong and beef tartare with raw shrimp sashimi — all dishes that suit the name Jumo ("tavern keeper") and pair wonderfully with makgeolli — were distinctive and delicious.

So many kinds of makgeolli — honeycomb honey makgeolli, strawberry-muddled makgeolli, Isibo makgeolli. It's a bit of a shame that the makpuccino we got with the reservation isn't on the menu. I wish they'd add it as a new item...

Lots of makgeolli and liquors that women especially love. I overheard the table behind us saying the makgeolli is so tasty you can end up drunk fast without realizing it...

What is Jumo like inside? Seven tables in a dim basement

Jumo isn't huge — about seven four-person tables. The exterior is pretty ordinary, but the real charm seems to be inside.

A big screen on one wall was playing My Love from the Star. No sound, so it was nice to just space out watching it while drinking. It added to the atmosphere.

Stylish posters everywhere. The makgeolli honestly looked like a latte. Against the gray background with the lamps, the dim mood was great for focusing on conversation.

Jumo's free side dishes and the non-alcoholic strawberry highball

We ordered beef tartare with raw shrimp sashimi, spicy roe jjampong, and a non-alcoholic strawberry highball at Jumo. As the basics, we got barley tea(?), caramel popcorn, and salad.

Caramel popcorn and salad as basic side dishes

The caramel popcorn was crunchy and sweet, delicious. But since the makgeolli itself is a bit sweet, the sweet-on-sweet combo meant we stopped eating it after a while. The salad had a yuzu dressing, I think — refreshing!

Clean and tidy.

A neatly set table

The non-alcoholic strawberry highball came out first. Felt like a soft drink, packed with muddled strawberry at the bottom. My husband, who's a lightweight, said it was delicious.

The beef tartare and raw shrimp came out first. I've eaten a lot of raw shrimp lately, but oh, Jumo uses pretty big shrimp. Big enough to split into two bites!

Fried shrimp heads and chojang (vinegar-chili sauce) came alongside. My husband counted the fried heads to see if they matched the number of shrimp — they matched exactly! They thoughtfully gave us seaweed too, since a lot of people wrap it in seaweed.

Out of focus, but I liked the feel, so posting it anyway. A setting that matches the bar's mood well.

What does the makpuccino, Jumo's Naver reservation perk, taste like?

The makpuccino from the Naver reservation came out sampler-sized. The foam on top deflates over time, so drink it quickly once it arrives. Sweet, basically like a tasty latte — but there's definitely alcohol in it. I felt a bit tipsy later...

While I was busy taking photos, the spicy roe jjampong arrived, bubbling away. The reviews had been so good, I'd been looking forward to it!

Raw shrimp and beef tartare wrapped in gim (dried seaweed)

The first bite was plain, unseasoned raw shrimp. Chojang is always great, but dipping it in sesame oil first and then chojang was even better. Firm, springy, and sweet. Best raw shrimp I've had lately! Maybe it's the size?

The seaweed was meant for wrapping shrimp, but my husband wrapped tartare in it instead. Oh, that combo was good too...! Maybe because the tartare itself was so good — the meat was very fresh and well-seasoned, and my husband (more of a meat person) raved that he liked the tartare even more than the raw shrimp.

Why you should order Jumo's al-jjamppong

Next was the spicy roe jjampong. Reviews don't lie. The cod milt was fresh, and the pollock roe was truly savory and delicious. There's quite a lot of roe packed in. The udon noodles worked well too... I bet Chinese-style noodles would've worked just as well.

The seasoning has a peppery, almost yeolla-myeon (spicy instant noodle) kind of edge to this jjampong, but the MSG taste isn't overdone — it's a genuinely delicious jjampong. You can really taste the roe's own flavor, which I loved. You have to try this one... (Wonder if you can order extra roe?)

And the makpuccino makes its appearance! My husband was driving, so I drank the whole thing. So delicious! We both left satisfied, saying we absolutely have to come back. Next time, I'll order the grilled crab.
