Half-and-half katsu with udon near Samjeon Station, Seoul: Pine Katsu

Pine Katsu Jamsil Main Branch is a pork cutlet (tonkatsu) restaurant near Samjeon Station Exit 2 in Songpa, Seoul, just in front of the Lake Palace apartments. On this second visit the half-and-half katsu at 16,000 won let one order pair tenderloin with cheese cutlet, served alongside udon, and the coating stayed thin and crisp while the pork inside was moist and tender. Pine Katsu's half-and-half katsu is worth ordering if picking only one cutlet feels like a loss.

Dongdaegu Station barbecue restaurant with tableside brisket: Modak

Modak Texas Barbecue Dongdaegu Branch is a Texas-style barbecue restaurant on Dongbu-ro 34-gil near Dongdaegu Station in Dong-gu, Daegu. Two coworkers stopped in after work and ordered the Memphis Platter Set for two, and a staff member explained each cut and carved the brisket, spare ribs and pulled pork at the table, while the nachos and tomato soup were finished before the mains arrived. With wide spacing between tables and dividers between seats, Modak Texas Barbecue is worth recommending as a meetup spot near Dongdaegu Station.

Base Burger Gwanggyo Avenue France Branch is a handmade burger restaurant on the 2nd floor of Avenue France, a 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of Gwanggyo Jungang Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. Eating alone after work before an eyelash perm appointment, the writer ordered three items at once — the Base Burger set (₩12,100), the chilli cheese mozza bar (₩3,700) and mozza chicken bites 2p (₩7,200) — and paid ₩500 extra to swap the fries for cheese bacon fries. With free refills at the potato chip self-bar, Base Burger works well for a solo meal, and anything left over can be packed to go.

Seongan-gil pot rice restaurant with free parking in Cheongju: Sorori

Sorori Cheongju Main Branch is a pot rice and buckwheat gimbap restaurant on Seongan-gil in Cheongju, Chungbuk, directly across from the Cheongju Urban Regeneration Hub Center. As a regular, the writer ordered the galbi pot rice (16,000 won) and fresh salmon buckwheat gimbap (13,000 won) and ate them with pickled chili, seaweed and wasabi, in a room of about 20 four-person tables with baby chairs and a self-serve bar, plus 1 hour of free parking in the hub center's underground lot. For a filling meal on Seongan-gil, Sorori is an easy recommendation.

Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang is a snow crab and seafood restaurant on the crab street of Jukdo Market in Pohang. The red crab set for two came with abalone porridge, corn cheese, soy-marinated crab, spicy raw fish salad (hoe-muchim), cold raw fish soup (mulhoe), sashimi, sea squirt, sea cucumber and abalone, red crab and shrimp, rice mixed in the crab shell, and spicy seafood stew, and even off season the red crab claws were packed with meat. Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang works well for travelers who want a full seafood spread at a fixed, posted price.

Gatpo Karin is a private-room izakaya on the 4th floor of a building three minutes' walk from Apgujeongrodeo Station Exit 5 in Gangnam, Seoul. The order was Karin futomaki (half plate) at 22,000 won, abalone innard pasta at 35,000 won and spicy minari fish cake nabe at 34,000 won, and the futomaki came generously packed with seasonal sashimi while the fish cakes were springy and clearly premium. With private rooms and a birthday setup on request, Gatpo Karin suits gatherings on a special day.

Jjambbong Jijon Bucheon Jung-dong Branch is a Chinese restaurant on Jungdong-ro in Wonmi-gu, Bucheon, Gyeonggi, open until 2:30am. This family meal covered a large Jijon jjajangmyeon, sujebi jjamppong, sticky rice sweet and sour pork, crab and shrimp fried rice and fried mandu, with unlimited black rice plus free drinks and coffee. Suragan Tteokbang is a rice cake shop at 41 Noyeon-ro in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City, where omegi-tteok (sweet red-bean rice cakes) are picked one by one at 1,000 won each for gift packing or nationwide delivery. At Suragan Tteokbang the omegi-tteok went into a flower-pattern box with a ribbon handle, along with one pack of baram-tteok (crescent-shaped rice cake, 4,000 won), then were cut open at home to compare types. The nut, black bean and bean-powder omegi-tteok all had a gentle red bean sweetness that made them easy to give as a gift.

On the last day of a Pohang trip, the Bakdal Set for two (120,000 won) arrived as a full course — a spread of banchan, slushy mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup), a mixed sashimi plate, bakdal snow crab and a spicy stew to finish — with crab legs packed full of meat and mul-hoe as good as a specialist shop's. For crab and sashimi in one sitting at Jukdo Market, the Bakdal Set at Dongnam Hoe Sikdang is the answer.
