Jukdo Market snow crab restaurant in Pohang: Dongnam Hoe Sikdang

In short

Dongnam Hoe Sikdang is a snow crab and sashimi restaurant just inside the entrance of Jukdo Market in Pohang. On the last day of a Pohang trip, the Bakdal Set for two (120,000 won) arrived as a full course — a spread of banchan, slushy mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup), a mixed sashimi plate, bakdal snow crab and a spicy stew to finish — with crab legs packed full of meat and mul-hoe as good as a specialist shop's. For crab and sashimi in one sitting at Jukdo Market, the Bakdal Set at Dongnam Hoe Sikdang is the answer.

Dongnam Hoe Sikdang is a snow crab and sashimi restaurant at 36 Jukdosijang-gil in Jukdo Market, Pohang, open from 09:00 to 22:00. Today I'm leaving a review of this Jukdo Market crab restaurant.

Guess it's famous as a Jukdo Market crab spot for a reason — the outdoor fish tanks have a huge variety of creatures in them!

What comes with the 120,000 won Bakdal Set for two?

The Dongnam Hoe Sikdang Bakdal Set for two is ₩120,000 and comes with snow crab, mixed sashimi, mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup), seafood, and spicy stew all in one. Here's the menu board photo. We ordered the Bakdal Set for two. Last day of the Pohang trip — burning it all down with crab, haha!

There were a lot of travelers in the place, but also a good number of older locals, which made me think this must be a real local favorite — haha, got my hopes up.

One lottery ticket per person for leaving a Naver photo review. Kind of unusual — they give you a lottery ticket for a Naver review, lol.

Banchan worth the table: soy-marinated crab to braised pollack

The banchan (side dishes) at Dongnam Hoe Sikdang come out as corn cheese, fried enoki mushroom, fish cutlet, rice balls, soy sauce marinated crab, noodles, seafood ramyeon, and braised pollack. After a short wait the banchan arrives, and it's all genuinely good stuff, no filler at all.

I wanted to devour it all, but if you fill up now you won't be able to eat properly later, so you have to pace yourself, lol. I loved every single one of these and overall the taste was great too.

Soy sauce marinated crab served as a side dish

Soy sauce marinated crab really shouldn't be a mere side dish — it was packed with roe too, and I wanted to eat it with rice. Held back because I was worried about filling up.

Slush-style mul-hoe included in the Bakdal Set

Slushy mul-hoe and the mixed seafood plate

The mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup) that comes with the snow crab set! It was genuinely delicious — whoever makes it here has real skill.

That slush-style broth completely blows away the summer heat! Such a rich, savory broth — really delicious!

Plate of mixed seafood and white wood ear mushrooms

Mixed seafood plate, white wood ear mushrooms. Mixed seafood also comes with the set! Unusually, chapssalbap (glutinous rice) also comes out — older diners love glutinous rice, so this seems like a great spot for family gatherings.

Mixed sashimi plate, plus complimentary gizzard shad

The mixed sashimi platter is included in the set, and that day they gave us complimentary gizzard shad (jeoneo) as a service item. Oh man, the mixed sashimi here is insane — the fish is genuinely sweet. The gizzard shad was amazing too, the best I've ever had.

Doesn't the sashimi look gorgeous too? It must be because they use such fresh fish — it was so sweet, chewy, and delicious. You absolutely have to order the mixed sashimi here!

They also gave us vinegared rice and seaweed, so we ate it wrapped in seaweed like sushi — delicious that way too! They'll give you lettuce if you need it, so try wrapping it with ssamjang (dipping sauce) — genuinely so good.

How much meat is in the bakdal snow crab? Shelled at the table

The snow crab makes its entrance! Timed perfectly for right when we were finishing the mixed sashimi. The staff were so kind — for the parts that need two hands to crack, they cracked it right in front of us, haha, so nice. We just had to wear a glove on one hand to eat.

Plate of prepped snow crab

The meat yield on this snow crab is really excellent. I get happy just looking at this photo. I want to go back and eat it again. Popping out the claw meat in one clean piece — isn't that pure happiness? This is exactly why people come to Pohang.

Snow crab leg meat with full yield

Look at that yield — packed full without a single gap. There's a reason this place is famous as a Jukdo Market crab restaurant.

Crab shell full of roe and tomalley

The crab shell was also full of roe and tomalley, so savory and rich. It's delicious dipped with leg meat, and delicious mixed into rice too, but I was worried eating rice now would leave no room for the stew, so I just ate the tomalley on its own. And honestly, even that alone was delicious.

Snow crab body meat cut for easy eating

The body meat was also cleanly cut for easy eating, and you can see the yield is full there too. Scrape it all out and eat the body meat as well, haha.

The spicy stew that ends the course

No matter how full you are, you can't skip the spicy stew (maeuntang)! They move the burner to the center to make it easier to eat.

Spicy stew boiling on the burner

This one gets tastier the longer you boil it. That spicy, tangy flavor is top-notch. As it boils you start to see the fish oil rise to the surface — that's when it truly peaks. So good.

Close-up of the finished spicy stew broth

The broth had such a deep flavor with an addictive quality that kept pulling my spoon back in. The stew here is genuinely delicious too.

Is the Bakdal Set at Dongnam Hoe Sikdang worth it?

That's my review of Dongnam Hoe Sikdang, a crab restaurant in Jukdo Market, Pohang. The staff were so kind from the start that it put me in a good mood right away, haha. Every dish that came out was delicious! Especially the mul-hoe — genuinely as good as a dedicated mul-hoe specialty restaurant. The sashimi was in such good condition we finished every last bite!

On top of that, the crab needs no explanation — prepped for easy eating with great meat yield, so we ate until we were completely full, and the finishing stew had such a deep broth flavor it would cure a hangover instantly with a drink. If you're looking for a good restaurant at Jukdo Market in Pohang, I highly recommend this place!
