Gangnam dessert café yellow cheesecake: Something About Coffee

I was around Gangnam Station on a weekend, looking for a café where I could have coffee and dessert together, and ended up at Something About Coffee. Between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station there are so many cafés that it's hard to choose, but this one had such a wide variety of desserts that picking was half the fun. It does get busy on weekends, so if you want a more relaxed visit, going a bit earlier is probably a good idea. It'd also work well as a Gangnam Station blind date spot, a date spot, or a place to meet up with friends.

The building spans three floors, so it's bigger than I expected. It was busy when I visited on the weekend, and there were customers on every floor.

Unlike a typical Gangnam Station café that uses just one floor, Something About Coffee has quite a variety of seating across three floors. The mood shifts slightly as you go up, so it was fun to look around and pick a spot.

There's also a terrace, which looks like a nice spot for coffee outdoors on a nice day.

Alongside coffee, lattes, and signature drinks, they sell a wide range of desserts. Americano is ₩6,500, café latte ₩7,000, and vanilla or hazelnut latte ₩7,200.

There are several cakes inside the showcase, and new ones keep getting added. Every single slice looks great, so it's fun both to look at and to eat!

It was crowded being the weekend, but staff kept making and restocking desserts. So desserts that weren't there when I first walked in showed up later, which made picking what to eat a slow, fun process.

Desserts include cheese cake ₩8,900, scone ₩4,500, madeleine ₩3,000, cream cake ₩7,000, baked snacks ₩3,000, and injeolmi (sweet rice cake) crumble ₩6,000.

Black sesame latte and americano

Starting with the drinks, my favorite was the black sesame latte. It's one of Something About Coffee's signature drinks, and black sesame lattes usually sound like they'd be nutty but pretty sweet. This one wasn't as sweet as I expected, though — I liked that. You could taste the nuttiness of the black sesame without it being overly sweet, so it went well alongside dessert without feeling heavy. Even people who don't like sweet drinks could probably enjoy this one comfortably. The americano I ordered alongside it was good for alternating sips with dessert.

And the one I was most looking forward to — the hwang cheese cake (yellow cheese cake). I've been into yellow cheese desserts lately, so I picked this one, and it looked really appetizing from the start.

The cake has two layers — a dense yellow cheese layer and a soft cream cheese layer — sitting on a cookie base. With one bite you get both the dense cheese flavor and the soft cream cheese, and the cookie base at the bottom adds a crunchy texture.

I thought the cheese cracker decoration on top was just for looks, but it was actually tasty too. The cheese cake itself is on the dense side, so a slice was good to eat slowly alongside coffee.

Looking inside the pound cake, there are figs dotted throughout along with nuts. So instead of just a soft pound cake, you get bits of fig and nuts here and there, which made for an interesting texture.

The distinctive sweet chewiness of the fig and the nutty, crunchy feel of the nuts went well with the pound cake. I thought the name 'caramel' might mean it'd be very sweet, but it paired well with coffee. I especially liked how the texture changed slightly with every bite since the ingredients were scattered throughout the slice.

Is Something About Coffee worth it for dessert near Gangnam Station?

This felt less like a place you'd go just for coffee, and more like a Gangnam Station café where picking desserts is the main fun. It was definitely crowded on the weekend, but the dessert case kept getting restocked, so browsing it was enjoyable too. Since not everything is out at once, new desserts might appear each time you visit, which kept me deliberating over what to try.

With space up to the third floor and a terrace, it looks like a nice place for coffee outdoors on a good-weather day. If you have plans near Gangnam Station, or you're looking for a dessert café after a meal around Sinnonhyeon Station, the location is convenient. Next time I'd like to try some of the other baked snacks or cakes.
